I never, ever, ever get invested in any particular recruit or coach. Doing that seems pointless to me since I'm unlikely to get my pick.

Having said that, I would prefer a head coach as a replacement. I'd like to see them go with the Bo Ryan, Cignetti, or Fran McCaffrey model. Pick a mature head coach who has had success with more than one program but has yet to coach in the big leagues.
 


I'd imagine Medved is the most likely replacement. He's not a home run, but he's solid IMO.

I like Richey a lot from Furman but his background really looks like a Southeast guy. Can't imagine this would be the job he moves for.

Dutcher would still be the home run, even at age 65.

wouldn't imagine either.....but the guy can coach, proven at the D1 level. someone is going to give him another chance and im guessing Mcneese isnt on his long term plan
 




Just spitballing here, no particular order. ...

I've been a Medved guy, but there certainly will be other viable candidates.

Would the guy at Drake leave after one season?

Bobby Hurley? Mixed results at ASU, but you never have to worry whether he has a pulse. He recruits (and gets) really good guards. Gotta' have those in the Big Ten.

Bryce Drew (Grand Canyon). Had an awful winless (SEC) season at Vandy, but has rebounded at GCU.

Randy Bennett (Saint Mary's). Seems like a West Coast guy but he wins a lot (with less). And he gets really good international players, which has become an even more important pipeline in this new era.

Love Izzo, but none of his assistants or former assistants, please. Not a good track record there.

Medved doesn't win at the level he's at. Gotta be better names...Minnesota is in the Big Ten....there are only 18 of those jobs. There a lot of schools below the Big Ten....Michigan just hired a head coach....follow their lead. UCLA hired a head coach a couple years ago...he's got a hard job doing okay...follow their lead.
Target the Creighton coach....others like him...elevate your targets!!!
Richard Pitino is a better coach than Medved....we need a "How'd they get that guy?" kinda hire.

TBH I think this hire really is going to come down to Coyle being invested in doing a thorough search and having a real plan.

Whoever we hire cannot go the Ben route of trying to have 3 or 4 or his starters each year be low major portal players. Banking on a bunch of those guys hitting is just insane, one or 2? sure.

With the revenue sharing the hope has to be that money will go to RETENTION. Don't worry about trying to battle for a bunch of transfers. Get a coach that wants to build something stable and has the coaching and connecting ability to do so.

To have any success we have to focus on getting players like Asuma and developing them. While Coyle has to do his part to make sure we can afford to keep them.

More teams are already starting to realize the key to retention. Even the rich and big programs are struggling with 1 year "pay to play" guys, a lot more misses than hits. So its crazy when you are a program that cant even get the top choices.

I'm a bit higher on Medved than you are, but let's not bury the lede here. You're right. We've done it before. Both Tubby and PJ were "How'd they get that guy" hires. The hoops program, however, is very down, and it's to the point where attracting a top established talent might not be realistic.

Wisconsin started their dynastic run by hiring the UW-Green Bay coach who was previously the UW-Stevens Point coach and continued it by hiring the UW-Milwaukee coach who was previously the UW-Platteville coach. As the line from Star Trek goes, many such journeys are possible.

The biggest thing is they have to let Coyle do his job. No mandates from above, no search committees, no interviews with multiple people involved. Don't let the process get watered down and influenced by nonsense.

Let Coyle go get his guy. He is strategic and good at it. Conducting good coaching searches is one thing he has done well here (except for the one where he was told what to do and who should help him).

Let him do it. There are no guarantees, but he can run a good search and find a good coach.

And Indiana football had the year they just had after hiring a 63 year old who had a 119-35 career record at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (DII), Elon (FCS), and James Madison (FCS until recently).

This is my preference exactly. Hire a guy who has had significant success at multiple programs but never got the opportunity to coach in the big leagues. The game is the same as they play at the lower levels. The players are just bigger and more athletic at this level.
 


Look across the building for your model for who Coyle is going to hire.

Coach Plitzuweit was someone who has multiple years of head coaching experience at mid tier D1 programs, had a proven winning record, and the ability to coach up players in a program with limited resources.

This is what Coyle will be hiring. Not sexy - but that's exactly what the men's program needs
 

The coach the AD should have went after last season is now coaching at Michigan.

At this point I just can’t see us thinking we are too good for any candidate, regardless of the reason.

We hired Ben with heavy input from people who didn’t care about, attend games, or ultimately even follow the Gophers basketball. In that case it was for political and social reasons. We can’t have another search with input from people that could care less whether we win or lose. And spoiler, it usually results in losing.
 

Going after a Shaka Smart of Marquette or T.J. Otzelberger of Iowa State would be examples of ones I would like to see us target. Might come with a little price tag, but also probably more sold tickets and exciting basketball

I'm sure they're beating down the door to come rebuild Minnesota.
 

It will be interesting to see how Danny Sprinkle does with Washington in the Big 10 after solid 1 season with Utah State. Which has seen their coach leave every year it seems. Ryan Odom got VCU to NIT last year after couple years with Utah State. See Utah State with new coach still doing ok this year too.
