Richard Rainbolt's "Gold Glory"
The official team photo of the 1940 team, with all coaches, is in Rainbolt's Gopher football history, "Gold Glory" (1972). The players' names below the photo are: Gene Flick, Urban Odson, Niel Litman, Bruce Smith, Bill Daley, Fred Vant Hull, Don Nolander, Gene Bierhaus, Jim Lushine, Joe Hirscher, Bill Baumgartner, Dick Wildung, Bob Smith, Leonard Levy, Ed Lechner, Howard Straiton, Gordon Paschka, Judd Ringer, Bob Fitch, Warren Plunkett, Bob Sweiger, Joe Mernik, Jim Shearer, Tom Riley, Mark Moore, Ed Steinbauer, Joe Jamnik, George Franck, Bob Bjorklund, Bill Johnson, Bob Paffrath, Helge Pukima, Bill Kuusisto, Bob Kolliner, John Bartlett.
Hard to believe the roster was that small, but that's the team photo. Odson, Smith, Daley, Wildung, Frank, Paffrath and Pukima were All-Americans then or later.
