A good breakdown from Derek Burns at Gopher Daily

Outstanding.

I think he has a great point about the coach's philosophy in the 2nd half. They got conservative and were fine winning the game no matter how ugly the score.

It's possible but it's hard to believe the coach would've gotten that hot and bothered after the game while never positing that philosophy publicly.

The Flash QB will likely be the worst one we will see all year and maybe their offense as well. Yet they were still one play away from upsetting the Gophers.

On the other hand, their DL and LBs were physical and they had some huge dudes out there. Their run D has been decent thus far this year and they felt good about loading up the box. Plus CB Monday had a huge game with two INT's and the tackle and strip of Still for the long TD. Those were big plays for the Flash.

I know its just Kent State, but I, for one, think their D played well, were well coached, had a good game plan and put the pressure on the Gopher offense. And Limey was who they thought he was going to be. Stubborn and predictable.

I hope Kill is pissed enough to make some changes on the offensive side and give the kids a better chance to win. Still, they have to execute the game plan.

I agree that punt-a-palooza was a conscious decision by the coaches, to minimize mistakes on offense, keep good field position because Mortell was having a good game punting, and the Gopher defense was playing well. May have been boring and not a popular decision judging by the fan boos but it was probably in my opinion the right decision by the coaches. Kent State showed up to play, there not a great team by any means but there kids played hard, they had a really large front not quick, but strong guys and were determined to stop the run against the Gophers. Hard to get going running the ball when they are always having an un-blocked man due to scheme or execution.

Crazy to think this team you speak of was in a Jan 1st bowl game last season and playing a team that got shalacked by Illinois.

No it's not, we have transition in replacing some play-makers, and a few new players and depth issues due to Injury. I'm sure it is never easy to get motivated for a team you think you should just show up against and win. It happens in all levels of football, underestimating an opponent and poor play. Just ask the Vikings about there loss to the 49'rs they knew they were better than that team, than 3 tightends and a power back showed up and they were not ready for it. There is still a lot of learning going on, and people having to step up.

I still see the team having a lot of success this season, we have a kick A$$ defense, and it is just going to take a little longer than some of us would have thought or liked on offense to get it together. Talent is in the group, just experience and execution have to catch up. Mitch will get it together, I still believe he can make enough plays for this team to do well. If the ball hits you in the hands, need to start catching it. Don't care about the how it got there, if the ball is there make a play and catch the ball.

Remember the Oregon fan who broke down our roster before the season started? I believe they said something like our OL was really not that good, and David Cobb made all those yards on his own. (or was that someone here who posted that?) Looks like he was on to something.

It's hard to say in my opinion. We've had so many injuries.

Fantastic read, thanks for posting this week's breakdown, GII.

The run blocking was classic inside zone. We have not seen the outside zone, the trap play, or any backside attack either the QB or running back.
