A forecast of Gophers football’s biggest needs once transfer portal opens

Just don’t go get another QB in the portal. If we do, I’m afraid Lindsay will be out.

Why didnt we play Lindsey on Friday?
Because it was a 2 possession game against maybe your biggest rival until 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter, and then when we got the ball back it was victory formation time. You think there's a program in America that will send their backup freshman QB out on the field with those circumstances unless forced to?

Frankly, I’m excited for a serious look at Lindsey and the incoming true freshman.
I get that it’s fun to see what we have, but I don’t get how people are excited to just roll with two very young inexperienced unknowns. If we’re talking about any position other than QB I would think people would be saying you have to add some experience from the portal.

Maybe Wittke(sp?) has looked good in practice for a back-up. Just throwing that out there as I have no idea.
Think they are in delicate situation. Really depends how much they like Lindsey from what they've seen this year.

Less concerned about who we bring in on transfers and more hopeful that PJ continues his good effort, keeping our current players around. The guys like 0, 1, 91, 14 and 3 et al are all potential stars.

We need speed at WR and speed at nickel/LB.

We may need an offensive lineman but for the last two recruiting classes, we have recruited a few four-star potential studs so we have to see how their progression is going as they might be able to inject themselves into the starting lineup next year.

RB looking like a big need now with Bangura transferring out. Any word on how the freshmen Wright and Ijeboi have looked? Wright looks the part physically. Could early pt be getting pitched to rising recruit Marshall? Nubin would be the only experienced backup to Taylor at this point.

Assuming he is #1, I think OL has to rise to the top. He will need time back there to develop. Maybe he can go through his progressions/ reads as fast as Brosmer, but that is asking for much from a player that has seen limited time at the collegiate level.

He needs to be really coached up if that’s the case.
I would imagine that's the plan for the true sophomore. I don't remember hearing his name at all the last few games, but I could be wrong. I also doubt the Gophs will have the funds for a plug and play center.

I still want a receiver who can stretch the field to compliment Lyndsey’s big arm. We don’t want to become a one dimensional team again after discovering the forward pass this year!

The staff has been incredible at identifying DBs in the portal. Aside from Ethan Robinson and Jack Henderson currently, they were also right about Tre'Von Jones and Beanie Bishop (though he wasn't a fit here, he clearly was a talent). I wonder if one of the current safeties will take the Jack Henderson role next year. If not, I think they will be looking for quite a few DBs in the portal.

I'd consider finding a center and moving Johnson back to guard. Likely need a T in the mix as well.

I know he's young, but I can't wait until Nathan Roy is ready. I'm sure I'm not the only one. ...Could it be this coming year?

With the OL question we don't know if Callahan is confident that the returning guys are ready. Involvement in the OL portal will tell us. My guess is they bring it least one OL. It will also tell us about the QB, WR, CB, TE and kicker spots.

I think we all assume that Taylor will return at RB but if so a RB is not out of the question. And at least on DL for depth.

High level QB transfer will want guarantee to start. It's up to pj and staff to go with what they see in practice.

The most important decision of the offseason will be an honest assessment of Lindsey's readiness to be the QB1, based mostly on practice reps.

Yes, bringing in a veteran to compete could cause Lindsey to bolt. Probably not, given that he would be just another 3* frosh in the Portal with no game tape. But he could. That can't hold the staff hostage if they think he's got promise, but isn't ready to be QB1 next year.

The choice between find a guy to start, find a guy to compete, or go with the young guys will be huge.

I heard Ijeboi is looking really good.

It will be interesting to see how the K/P situation is handled with 105 roster spots. Do we go with the MN Grown Freshmen or bring in a known commodity to get through 2025?
