A forecast of Gophers football’s biggest needs once transfer portal opens

I think there is some young talent waiting in the wings on the oline but do you wait for it to develop or grab a more sure thing? I think the portal allows for needs but you risk losing developing talent. Spots are certainly open!

You need WR help for sure, and with how they threw the ball more that has to be more attractive to players than before. Driver and Lemeke are going to be ok, but who’s next? A good playmaker is needed badly.

Corner hurts losing both Walley and Robinson (although thought Robinson had another year if he wanted?) and it’s a tough position to grow into. I’d for sure look there as my #1 priority.

I think LB could be another area they need some help at. Baron is solid though.

OL, QB. Rationale: We will probably be more conservative next year unless and experienced QB is found. We need OL depth for that to be successful. Bigger issue - 106 years of TM and the 1 year of MB - appreciate everything they have done for us but we haven't developed ANYBODY to come in behind them. We are either going to be a landing spot of transfers or a revolving door based on the AK disaster. There is no guarantee from year to year that the #2 QB sticks around. Has been proven from previous years.

I think they need a quarterback. People say they like the young kid but you never know if he’s ready to play and it’s a win now league.
If we could get another Brosmer, sure. But I don't know how many of those are available.

I wouldn’t mind another rb either depending on how the young guys are looking.

Lots of FCS QBs put up big numbers on bad teams. Brosmer could have been a bust. He was decent. But it's more likely the freshman is a bust than a guy who has played a few seasons of DI football already and at least excelled in the box score.

Anyone with insight on how the Georgia WR has looked in practice? Sure seems to have the measurables.

OK - going on a rant here.

every year at National Signing Day, we hear about how good all of these HS recruits are going to be.
then at the end of the season, suddenly the narrative is "we have to go to the portal - we need help at all these positions."

so what happened to all of those good recruits?

I would hope that at least some of the recruits from the last couple of classes who have had time in the program would be ready to contribute.

If I was a HS recruit in the program for a year or two, and the Gophers brought in portal players who jumped over me on the depth chart, what incentive is there for me to stay in the program?

Every team will be in flux IMO
Every power 4 team is going to lose a ton of guys due to new roster limits

Will be a ton of guys from low on the depth chart available.
Scouting from previous years and relationship building from previous years will be important as a lot of these guys will have no tape that isn’t at least 2 seasons old

That’s the case everywhere not just Mn

There are some schools that straight up would prefer transfer players over high school players because they can’t transfer. Sport is broken

This squad was senior and draft-eligible to a great degree. I think they are going to have to look for immediate contributors across the board. One thing I would like to see (but probably won't) is a game-wrecking LB. The LB corp under Fleck has been largely productive, but without a ton of impact.

Fleck should recruit old friend Jacob Clark. I’m serious.
Would be a great add. I know we are excited about the rs frosh, but I imagine their will be a learning curve and I would expect a drop off at qb play next year if we roll him out.

any quality depth on the D, especially LB and maybe DE.

I have no idea on the depth at RB.

Not sure what that bridge is like but he’s been very solid this year. If Lindsey beats him out—awesome.
