Kill's contract: New Gophers coach Jerry Kill will make an annual base salary of $500,000, with $600,000 more in supplemental compensation, according to the contract terms agreement letter he signed Sunday.

Kill, who has not signed the five-year contract, was the Gophers' only finalist.

The incentives in Kill's contract include $50,000 for five Big Ten wins in a season, $25,000 for each Big Ten victory after the fifth, $25,000 for being conference coach of the year, $100,000 for a Big Ten division title and $150,000 for reaching the Big Ten championship game. Kill will earn $100,000 for taking the Gophers to the Capitol One Bowl or Outback Bowl and $25,000 for any other lower-level bowl.

Kill, who went 10-3 at Northern Illinois this season, has to pay the university two times his base salary if he leaves.

I like seeing incentive-based contracts. It's interesting what other minor things are in there. Maybe we can start working on Tubby's lifetime extension?

Thanks! I always thought that coaches' contracts had way more legalese and were like 40 pages in length.

That was simply the offer letter, I am sure the actual contract is slightly longer with more leagalese in it.

That's awesome they even added incentive clauses for academic performance, which based upon his history, Kill's Gophers should easily exceed every single season.

And yeah, relative to what IU is paying to a totally unproven though very well-regarded coordinator, it seems like we got ourselves a hell of a good deal here.

Wow. Indy just paid 1.2 million a year for Kevin Wilson.

The U structures its contracts so that the base is $500k but supplemental compensation (media guarantees paid through the U, etc.) is additional. In Kill's case it has been reported that piece is about $600k, so the total per year guaranteed is actually more like $1.1 million.

Yeah I was wondering about that, like his compensation for his radio and TV show and things like that. Well that's good. I'm glad to hear we're not low-balling the guy.

Natalie Kane hosting the Jerry Kill show.
I cant wait for that LOL

Does anyone have a list of how the Big 10 coaches rank, salary wise?

GL, I found this: http://www.coacheshotseat.com/BigTenCoachesSalariesContracts.htm

If this is correct, Kill will be the 10th highest paid coach in the Big Ten (actually 11th when Nebraska starts playiing). The only coach making less is Pat Fitzgerald, but his salary is not public, so it's possible we have the lowest paid coach in the league. I have a hard time believing that Fitzgerald only makes 750K.

So, the $600K is money that we guarantee, but doesn't necessarily come from the U? The U only pays it out there is a shortfall from the media, such as the media not being interested?

All of the money is guaranteed, regardless of the circumstances that occur. The U structures it this way so that when they release salary figures, it appears that the coaches only make slightly more than the high-level administration, when in actuality they make 2-3 times as much. It's to appeal to the tree-hugging idiots who don't understand the pay market for big-time athletics and to give the illusion of coaching salaries being lower than they really are.

If I'm not mistaken, it also plays into the buyouts. Schools typically aren't typically on the hook for the media/shoe portions of the deal in a buyout I think.

100K for a Big Ten divisional title and 150K for reaching the Big Ten championship game? Aren't those the same thing? If you are a Big Ten divisional champ don't you play in the championship game? Is it reported wrong or just stupidly worded?

If you tie for a division title you might be considered a division champ, but don't get to play in the game title game. If the schools had the same records this year, but were in the division format OSU would have tied for their division, but not played in the title game.

Here is a list of the incentives in the contract. For the poster above, a Big Ten divisional championship and winning the overall Big Ten are the criteria for getting the $100k and $150k, respectively, not just reaching the Big Ten championship game.

National championship: $50,000
• Big Ten championship: $150,000
• Big Ten divisional championship: $100,000
• Named national coach of the year: $100,000
• Named conference coach of the year: $25,000
• Five Big Ten wins: $50,000
• Each addition Big Ten win after the fifth: $25,000
• Invitation to national championship game: $150,000
• Invitation to any other BCS bowl game: $125,000
• Invitation to Capitol One Bowl or Outback Bowl: $100,000
• Invitation to any other bowl game: $25,000
• Graduation success rate equal to or greater than that of the overall student body: $100,000
• APR rate greater than or equal to 940: $30,000
• APR rate greater than or equal to 950: $50,000
• APR rate greater than or equal to 960: $75,000

It may be just me but I hate ties. Either you win the division and play in the championship or you didn't win the division.

Exactly. See TTech, OU, and Texas in 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Big_12_Championship_Game#South_Division_3-way-tie_controversy). All 3 were considered Big XII South champs but OU went to the Championship Game on the BCS tiebreaker.

False. It is the same scenario as you saw in the Big Ten this season. MSU is still co-Big Ten Champ even though it didn't get the auto bid to the Rose Bowl (b/c of the BCS tiebreaker, despite beating WI). They can't take the title of co-division champ from you in a tie. You can simply lose out on the tie-breaker that sends to the Championship Game. This only comes into play in a 3 way tie.

I agree, the idea that only the winner of the tie breaker is the champion is for the NFL. Shared titles are an integral part of college football. I'll be happy to hoist a Division Championship banner at TCF even if it is a shared title and we didn't get the tiebreaker.

False!? I am entitled to my own opinion. That is all my post was. I can't do anything about what they actually do but that was just my own opinion that I didn't like ties.

Ack. Sorry! I managed to read right past the first sentence that made clear that you were stating an opinion. My bad Central!
