Five Things You Need To Know

1. Minnesota welcomes Michigan State to TCF?Bank Stadium this weekend. This will be the Spartans’ second trip to Minnesota’s new on-campus facility, as the Gophers prevailed 42-34 against Michigan State on Oct. 31, 2009. The Spartans have won two straight games against Minnesota, but both of those games were played in East Lansing, Mich. Minnesota trails 17-27 in the all-time series, but has won six of the last 10 meetings between the two schools and four of the last five meetings in Minneapolis. The Gophers, who are 11-12 all-time against Michigan State at home, have lost only once to the Spartans in Minneapolis since 1998 and that was a 44-38 setback on Oct. 18, 2003.

2. Saturday is Senior Day at Minnesota and the Gophers will honor 15 seniors prior to the game against Michigan State. Saturday will be the last time MarQueis Gray, John?Rabe, Brandon Green, Matt Kloss, C.J. Cesario, Keanon Cooper, Ryan Grant, Mike Rallis, Spencer Reeves, Michael Carter, Troy Stoudermire, Nathan Tow-Arnett, D.L. Wilhite, David Schwerman and Jordan Wettstein will take the field at TCF?Bank Stadium as a member of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

3. The Gophers are 6-5 on the season, which means they will play in a bowl game for the first time since 2009. Minnesota had six wins combined in 2010 and 2011. Minnesota will compete in its 15th bowl game at the end of the season. The specific bowl and opponent will be announced in the future. The Gophers are 5-9 all-time in bowl games, with their most recent being a 14-13 loss to Iowa State on Dec. 31 in the 2009 Insight Bowl. Minnesota’s last bowl win was a 20-16 victory against Alabama on Dec. 31 in the 2004 Music City Bowl.

4. Saturday’s game is the last game of the regular season for Minnesota. The Gophers won six combined games during the previous two seasons, but they won the last game of the season each time. Minnesota upset Iowa 27-24 to end 2010 and then defeated Illinois 27-7 to end 2011. A win on Saturday would mark the first time since 1999-2001 that the Gophers would end three straight regular seasons with a win (Minnesota also won season-ending game in 1998 against Iowa). The Gophers ended 1999 with a win at Iowa and then defeated the Hawkeyes at home in 2000. Minnesota finished the 2001 season with a home victory against Wisconsin. Saturday will mark the first time that Minnesota will end the regular season playing Michigan State.

5. On defense, the Maroon and Gold have allowed 261 points this year. With a strong defensive showing against Michigan State on Saturday and in the bowl game, the Gophers have a chance to keep their opponents from scoring a combined 300 points this year. The last time that happened was the 2004 season. That year, the Gophers allowed a combined 273 points in 12 games and beat Alabama 20-16 in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.

A Gopher Victory would ...
• be the third straight at home against Michigan State
• end a two-game losing streak to the Spartans
• be their seventh of the season, which would be the most for Minnesota since it won seven games in 2008
• be their third in Big Ten play, which would be the most for Minnesota since it won three Big Ten games in 2008
• improve Jerry Kill’s record at Minnesota to 10-14
• improve Minnesota’s all-time record against Michigan State to 18-27
• be the program’s 654th victory

A Gopher Loss would ...
• be Minnesota’s sixth of the season
• snap a two-game home winning streak against the Spartans and be Minnesota’s 28th loss all-time to Michigan State
• be the program’s 467th loss
• be their third straight to Michigan State

i know its only one game difference but it sure feels like a win over msu and us going 7-5/3-5 is a who heck of a lot better than going 6-6/2-6.

gotta get this w

Michigan State Spartans at Minnesota Golden Gophers: Preview, prediction, TV info

The game comes down to: Can Minnesota generate points? The Minnesota attack has been pedestrian the past three games and hasn't scored more than 17 points since before Halloween. The Gophers will have a big test against a tough Spartan defense, but Michigan State has proved vulnerably to a quick passing game and misdirection running plays.

Prediction: Michigan State 20, Minnesota 10

ESPN Predictions:

MICHIGAN STATE at MINNESOTA

Brian Bennett: Really tempted to pick Minnesota here, but the Gophers are banged up on both sides of the ball. Assuming Michigan State comes to play, the Spartans' physical style will take its toll. Minnesota jumps ahead early, but the Spartans mount a comeback in the second half and go ahead for good on an Andrew Maxwell TD pass to Dion Sims. Michigan State -- finally -- wins a close game to go bowling. ... Michigan State 24, Minnesota 17

Adam Rittenberg: Like you, it wouldn't shock me to see Minnesota win, but the injuries combined with a young quarterback facing a ferocious defense prove to be too much. The Spartans have their typical red zone stalls in the first half but come alive following a pick-six by CB Darqueze Dennard. Michigan State takes a second-half lead, and holds on behind Le'Veon Bell and the run game to squeak into a bowl. ... Michigan State 20, Minnesota 16

FSN: Gophers seniors take stock before home finale

"I'm really glad I stuck it out. I was thinking about leaving because I felt like things weren't organized and it was going downhill with us," Stoudermire said. "I wanted to get myself back on track. But I talked to a few people, talked to my parents. They changed my mind about it, and I'm really glad they did because if they didn't I wouldn't have a degree right now."

STrib prediction:

PREDICTION

All seven of Michigan State's Big Ten games have been decided by four points or fewer, and the Gophers should make it eight. Watch for Nelson to bounce back, and for MarQueis Gray to take a few snaps. But a close game comes down to third-down stops, and the Spartans specialize in them.

1500 Preview: Gophers have chance to deny Michigan State bowl eligibility

The call: Michigan State

The Spartans have more to lose in this one. A loss on Saturday would leave Michigan State without a bowl bid for the first time since its 4-8 season in 2006. That five-year streak isn't likely to end. The Gophers aren't going to away easily on Senior Day in their final home game of the year. But with Bell harnessing the potential for a big rushing game, Michigan State should sneak away with a victory in a low scoring affair.

So wait... he says Minnesota will be the 8th time MSU has won or lost a game by 4 points or less then predicts a 7 point win? Am I missing something here?

Drew Sharp in today's Detroit Free Press (freep.com):

Michigan State (minus-8 1/2) at Minnesota: The Spartans fulfill their own self-imposed bowl ban, arguing that there would be more interest going to an actual Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant rather than playing in the bowl of the same name. Pick -- Minnesota.
