4 star Sam Jackson recommits!

Was wondering what his situation was.

First he committed, then decommitted and now is recommitted. That's a lot of different usages for the word "commit."

Any way, glad he's back in the fold.

As I understand it, he wanted to explore playing quarterback in college and it was it generally thought he was told he wouldn't play QB here (which was the reason for the decommit).

From what I gather, he's a good enough athlete to be a real contributor at other positions though.

Does that sound right? I honestly don't know as I don't follow recruiting all that closely...

The staff told him they don’t view him as just a QB, but he has been told he’ll get an opportunity at QB. That has been the sticking point, but it’s what he’s heard from the other teams too.

His highlight reel is fun to watch, can't wait to see if our new offensive coordinator and other offensive coaches are creative enough to utilize his diverse skillset.

Okay, thanks. That's just about what I thought might have happened (or something very similar).

Gotta think this time his commitment is for good. Can't see him decommiting a second time from the U. Must have figured out what he needed to on the QB front. Kid seems to be an amazing athlete, will be fun to see what the staff does with him.

I wonder if he will be used as a "change of pace" QB once Green leaves. Also wonder if PJ is thinking we may need a QB like him if OL recruiting doesn't pick up. Loving this class though and think more positives are on the way.

He’s going to get a shot at QB. Using him as the occasional change of pace WC early on would be a perfect opportunity to see what he can do. He’s also dynamic at WR. Just get him on the field.

awesome! guy sure is a heck of an athlete! awesome news and another awesome commit!

cant wait to see what they can do with him! mix in some wild cat with him in his early years...
heck maybe his best spot is indeed QB....but I see a guy we can use all over the field on offense

Exciting pickup! Of course welcome back, no hard feelings for leaving us the first time around. He'll be an outstanding weapon on the field!

Not concerned at this point, but we are going to need some bodies to develop. I like seeing scholarship 4 OLs per class provided they aren't just filler. It looks like we've got some good offers out there and hopefully we can land them.

But this is about Jackson and it's great to see him back. We were his first choice and I can't blame him for shopping around a bit after such an early commitment.

Sam is from the same HS I graduated from. Glad to see him get back in the boat! It’s tough to pull Chicago area kids away from Notre Dame

This is from the 247 evaluation

Not a prospect who stands out physically on the hoof. Average height and needs to bulk up some. Does stand out on film as far as explosiveness and play-making ability. Fast, makes cuts at full speed and shows great ball skills for someone who has not played full-time receiver yet. Also has a strong arm at quarterback. The main question there is size as far as being a college signal caller. Too explosive and athletic though to not make an impact in college somewhere on offense. Even if it is as a receiver who plays quarterback part-time.

Looks like rivals has him as a 3* and ESPN and 247 have 4*.

Recruiting-wise, Minnesota is now ranked #2 in the Big Ten and #5 in the nation.

Now is when we can say that recruiting rankings matter. Before this?...rankings schmankings.
Rankings matter right at this very moment.

Let us never talk about this again...

Use the 3* if he becomes a great player in a couple years so we can apply the "diamond in the rough" tag to him. Use the 4* when we want to compare recruits with Iowa and Wisconsin fans, or to guys who still aren't convinced PJ Fleck can recruit here in Minnesota.

I'll be curious to see where it ends up. It is logical to assume that a lot of 5* and 4* talent committing will drop the Gophers in these rankings, just as has been the case in the last couple years. But, it seems reasonable to assume this year's drop won't be as far as the last two, when signing day approaches.

Anyone have any guesses? Top 20?

It's always nice to snag someone from Wiscy, Iowa, Notre Dame and Oregon! I fully trust PJ and crew will find a way to utilize his athleticism!
