Still seems like Canada would have been going crazy as it happened if they noticed it right away.

Are the medal rounds that way? Our team speed vs Canada would not be a good time

They do a 20 minute 5 on 5 overtime for gold medal game. If still tied it goes to a dreaded shootout

It’s like ending a golf tie on the putting green. Full strength or simply total shots on net at the end of reg. And end it. I mention this every year when we meet for hs hockey year review.

Total shots on bet would be dumb. After coaching this game for 40 years you can’t trust to many to keep an accurate count on shots. Full strength is the way to go

Yeah if total shots were used they would have to go back and review every shot on goal to make sure the count is accurate.

Although the thought of teams forcing shots from center ice late in a tie game just to boost their total is fascinating to think about from a strategy standpoint.
 

Total shots on net? That is the single most insane proposal to hockey I've heard in maybe, ever.
 


You would just have teams dumping the puck on net when they cross the red line the entire game.

I remember the old WCHA (?) days when opening rounds were decided by total goals scored in both games. That certainly added some crazy dynamics but this talk about total shots is lunacy.
 

I wonder if the NHL has some say in the 3 on 3 thing. Like an agreement to stop the NHL season to allow their players to play in the Olympics but we don't want any 2 or 3 OT games that go on forever.

I'm curious about "hs hockey year review". Care to expand on that? I'm a HUGE hockey fan and have relatives that coach HS hockey. What is debated there and by whom? What interesting things are being considered?

Side note specific to your thought about using shots on goal as the tiebreaker. One of the team's official scorers counts pretty much every breath towards initiating a shot as a shot on goal. The shot can be 5 feet wide, but if the goalie touches it, it's counted. I'm constantly telling my relative (an assistant) that the shots on goal are like double inflated and a shot attempt is not the same. He agrees and it frustrates him. 38 shots on goal sounds great. Until you realize it's only 15.

They should use 4-on-4 for the first half. First whistle after 5 minute mark goes to 3-on-3. 3-on-3 sucks. It's stupid. Shootouts are just completely idiotic. But you have to decide it somehow. I think the gold medal game is different somehow though.
 

Just looked up OT rules for 2026 Olympics:

2026 Olympic Hockey Overtime Rules:
  • Preliminary Round Games: 5-minute, 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime. If still tied, a 5-round shootout follows.
  • Knockout/Medal Rounds (Quarter/Semifinal): 10-minute, 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime. If still tied, a 5-round shootout is used.
  • Bronze Medal Game: 10-minute, 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime.
  • Gold Medal Game (Men's & Women's):
    • Format: Unlimited 20-minute periods of 3-on-3 sudden-death hockey.
    • Shootout: There is no shootout for the gold medal.
    • Intermissions: 15-minute intermissions between periods with ice resurfacing.
    • Sides: Teams do not change ends for the first overtime, but do for subsequent periods.
