Perhaps it's only AA and AAA that have to move up a class automatically. Then set up some kind of performance metric that determines if each small school has to move up or not.

If they’re shitty, why is it better for them to lose one playoff game vs a 2a team instead of a 1a team?

I get it in football because the classification somewhat determines the regular season schedule. We are talking about 4% of the schedule and losing to team X instead of team Y


I think the best solution is to have a multiplier.
If a kid is a free and reduced kid they count as .6 for MsHSL count
If a kid is paying tuition they count for 1.4 in the head count.

I'm not suggesting all are shitty, some are solid or average programs in 1a but aren't dominating like some of these other private schools. The 1.4 idea could work.

It would even allow kids who are in financial need based aid bringing their tuition to 0 to just count as 1

The private schools should definitely have their own class. But the metro public schools get in on the recruiting too. Look at Maple Grove. Those aren’t kids who grew up playing ball together.

Imagine how hard it is for an outstate school to compete when they don’t get to recruit and have players transfer in to play ball.

Outstate schools have open enrollment also.

Outstate schools have open enrollment also.

Open enrollment is hardly even a factor in this. If a metro private school has a reputation as a good basketball school they have thousands of kids who can choose to go to school there without open enrolling/recruiting. It’s just not the same as a rural school and their population to pull from. All metro private schools should be AAA at minimum.

It's partly open enrollment, it's partly recruiting, it's partly being good, it's partly parents, it's partly bad coaching and programs, it's partly priorities etc. etc.

Having a private school go to state 15 years in a row or winning AAA 5 years in a row is a problem. They should have to move up.

I'd require them to play AAA and set parameters for moving to AAAA. If they are AA or A I think they should have a separate private school league and state championship.

However like others have said, open enrollment and recruiting happens at the public schools.
