2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

It’s ten, 2-0 teams in 6A through two weeks

Forest Lake
White Bear Lake
Centennial
Champlin Park
Edina
Minnetonka
Maple Grove
Moorhead
Farmington
Shakopee
Makes me happy to see Forest Lake being pretty good the last few years after how historically terrible they were for so long.

Forest Lake snuck by Anoka and Prior Lake. With Mack Jurkovich out, the offense is really hurting and not explosive. They ran Kevin Ndirangu into the ground playing both ways last night. They really haven’t used Rychley much at all so far, he doesn’t look bad in his few carries. If Jurkovich is out for very long, I don’t see a world where this offense works long term.

Forest Lake vs park 0-2
White Bear Lake
Centennial
Champlin Park
Edina vs Eden prairie 1-1

Can’t be more than 7 after next week:
Moorhead vs Minnetonka
White Bear lake vs farmington
Champlin park vs centennial

Historically they haven’t. Some coaches do not like to share athletes and fall wrestling opportunities have increased. Look at all of the AAU basketball and club baseball tournaments now in the fall. Check book leagues everywhere
Growing up, I remember quite a few of my classmates being involved in athletics year round:

Football in the fall
Basketball, hockey, or wrestling in the winter
Baseball, track or golf in the spring

Perhaps that's changed since 40 years ago.

Yes it has. NCAA Recruiting and offer dates have changed as well. Colleges want to see a small percentage athletes out of season but many think it applies to them.

This was a tight, very physical game. EP running game and D are going to be tough to handle.
It was an interesting game. EP was doing their thing the first 18-20 minutes, 4-5 yards a play all the way down the field. MG offense seemed to get going there at the end of the 1st half to in 7-7 at halftime. 3rd quarter was all MG. Pretty sure EP didn't have a 1st down in the 3rd quarter & MG scored 14 on big plays. EP made it interesting scoring with like 3 minutes left in 4th, but MG put it away with a 60 yard QB sneak, reminiscent of Asad Abdul Khaliq's TD QB sneak run against Michigan in 2003, only this one ended the game instead of gave the ball back to opponent so they could run RB screen passes to tie & win the game.

I was impressed with Maple Grove. It is a step back I think from last year's team for sure, but that was a pretty darn good team. The RB hits the hole really hard, and the QB is still a threat in the passing game. They have some good balance. Would like to see their defense against a team with more balance. They literally were selling out against the run.

I think EP can play with anyone; they just need to be able to go down the field. I don't know if it's the QB isn't good enough to do it or Grant just doesn't want to do it. I'm guessing a little combo of both. My gut tells me though Grant would pass but just doesn't trust it. Nevertheless, until they at least show a threat of being able to go down the field, I don't know if they can beat the 3-4 top dogs in 6A. But they'll be able to bullyball a good number of teams on their schedule (STMA, Eastview, looking like Wayzata & I wouldn't be shocked if they can do it to Moorhead).

Coaching pay, facilities, youth programs, and/or what? Just curious
Good coach that runs a successful system. Youth programs- it’s little but the play youth games on varsity field with score board and announcer. Not all do these extras.
Demographics play a role as well.

We'll find out a bunch in the next few weeks:
-Don't know if #1, but Maple Grove probably deserves the ranking; they've had the most difficult 2 tests thus far that they have passed.
-Minnetonka has done what they're supposed to do; still waiting for first test
-Shakopee has done what they've needed to do; thought they'd be a little more dominating, but maybe Lakeville South belongs in the conversation?
-Moorhead has passed tests, including adversity last Friday. Things are about to get real the next few weeks for them.
-Edina can score; EP this week will be their toughest test thus far.
-EP loss to MG but will get some more cracks at it in the next few weeks to be in the conversation. Should be able to be competitive against everyone.
-As mentioned above, maybe sleeping a little on Lakeville South?

I think it's a safe bet your final 2 teams at US Bank will be amongst the ones listed above. Somebody else may sneak in to a semifinal spot (Forest Lake?), but to me, these are the leaders in the clubhouse.

Shakopee lost three fumbles in the first half of their game at South. South knows how to defend the similar offense.

6A is really about match-ups and I feel Maple Grove and Minnetonka match up with anyone and any style. I feel they are clear 1-2.

Kids are specializing earlier and earlier. And it probably hurts football the most, as it's a short season sport. Nearly everything else except maybe golf, is nearly year-round with club teams/tournaments.

The new stadium/field looks really nice. They were one of the last big schools to still have a grass field, and it was a shitty field 35 years ago. If I recall, they hadn't been able to host a track meet since the 90's it was so bad.

Too many mental penalties for EP. MG score just before 1st half due to an unsportsman penalty. Second half showed MG explosiveness with really quick RB's and a QB that could throw the rock. EP QB not a passer like MG QB. EP needs work on their right side defense, but they will be competitive against Edina, Minnetonka and Moorhead.

I had no idea that Jefferson and Kennedy are both getting new stadiums at their respective schools. I know Bloomington Stadium has lots of issues because of its age but this seems 25 years too late.

A few years ago they turfed the practice fields at the schools and play everything there except for Varsity games. There was push back from neighbors at the time to have lights and night games. They seem to have gotten past it and now added bleachers, lights, and other amenities to host games this year.

I played a game there back in 1990. It was a total dump then.

I'm going to ask this again, since it dropped off...

Are there there any real definitive sources for MN high school football records, or do they not exist since everything has to be self-reported by the schools? I feel like of all the sports, high school football has the worst record keeping.

Coaches Assocation website might be best option.
