2025 high school football thread

Heard that Coon Rapids was going to stay up in 6A and Apple Valley appealed to stay down.

Makes sense to have all five Anoka Hennepin schools in same class and play each other.
Apple valley is ineligible to appeal down
They don’t meet the criteria

From what I’ve head coon rapids thinks their schedule will be better for them as a 6a relief team than a 5a team

Might be true. I’m curious to see how the sections layout.

I have heard they won’t put an even number of relief teams in each section. I think that’s a mistake

They may wise up and do it

Sections are geographical so it will be hard when all 3 new teams are NW to do

I think

You have valley and Burnsville up. You’re missing farmington and Eastview

Perhaps those are the sections just swapping farmington and Eastview for BV and AV

I put an R next to likely relief teams

I would think you’d want to swap coon rapids East for centennial north so that it’s easier to schedule

My bad. Forgot those two flipping with Burnsville and Apple Valley

Centennial is furthest East. A-H Schools will try to get all 5 high schools in one section.

Park is not with Woodbury and East Ridge in this scenario.

Yes

For ease of scheduling it would be most advantageous to have an even number of relief teams in each section.
Coon rapids being in same section as other 4 doesn’t matter as they aren’t playing the section anyways

Park
Roseville
Eastview
Hopkins
Osseo
Coon rapids

Almost assuredly those 6 are taking relief scheduling (meaning they play each other + 3 in their section)

Is it confirmed there will be relief teams this year?

Going to guess there will always be relief teams. Last 2 year cycle it was decided that Coon Rapids and Osseo would play their full section of 7 games and 1 cross over.

For scheduling purposes they had four 6 team pods and an 8 team pod the last two years. The teams with relief played the other 5 teams with relief and 3 teams in their section.

Rochester Bulletin reported today that Mayo moving to 5A which we discussed and Stewartville to 4A. Stewartville has bumped back and forth the last few cycles.

Presumably Sec 1 - 5A will be:

Mayo
Century
JM
Owatonna
Northfield
New Prague

It was a 5 team section last season without Mayo. I guess there is a chance that New Prague could move out to balance another section in terms of numbers.

Shocked at how much smaller Faribault's adjusted enrollment is than neighboring schools.

The change is rather stunning over the past couple of decades.

More immigrants?

(EDIT: comment was in no way meant to be political and hope it isn't taken that way, just saying/wondering)

It should be the top half of these teams and that's it.

Would guess the bottom half here have the lowest chance at being competitive against the upper half, of any class in the state.

I assume that these are your best guesses and not "official". The meeting is this Thursday with official sections. I have seen stories on the local news regarding some big movement. Most interesting one to me was Rochester Lourdes dropping down to Class AA so will likely be in Section 1AA with Chatfield and Caledonia. I feel bad for the other teams in that section!

Rumor is that there are only TWO teams left from Section 1A in that classification. Will be interested to see how they fill the rest of it and how far north or west they have to go to get teams.

They’ve been down that way a lot lately

It’s been at least 6 years since they were with century and JM for playoffs

Have heard this as well

Relief schedule:
Hopkins
Osseo
Coon rapids
Roseville
Park
Eastview

Not having an even number of relief in each section means crossovers more common in weeks 2-7 than last two years

These 6 will play other 5 plus 3 from their section.

Roseville and park both in east means east schedule will be you play the section + one of park and Roseville and 2 random crosses vs all 4 non relief
Same with coon rapids and Osseo in the north.

West and south…Eastview and Hopkins play 5 relief plus 3 from their section.
Everyone in south and east plays 6 non relief in section.
3 in west plays hopkins
3 in south plays Eastview
Other 3 in both play an extra cross south vs west.
Plus one random cross vs all 4

I’m sure this is it and it got leaked through coaches. Makes perfect sense. Going to be a could really good 6 seeds come playoff time.

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam, but relief scheduling is beyond dumb. If teams cannot compete, they should be able to appeal to play in a lower class for two years maximum.

strongly disagree
Maybe the cut line should be different but if you are such a bad 6a team you can’t win you should gift that team a win against a 5a opponent

“Sorry St. Louis park, Hopkins is so bad they get to come kick your ass even though our metrics say you shouldn’t play”

I hear your point. I could also argue that if a 6A team can truly kick the ass of 5A teams, they should not be playing a relief schedule in the first place. Frankly, I would be fine with doing away with it altogether.

I’d be okay doing a relief schedule
The real issue is the cut line was arbitrarily set at 32 and it’s a stupid cut line

Plus:
They isolated 6a schools saying they can only play other 6a schools.
No other class does that.

If a team is 6a, they should be 6a though.
Any time you break the system to pick a winner you are also picking a loser somewhere, and that’s not what the MSHSL should do.

In my opinion there should be 6 classes not 7.
Or if there are going to be 7 they should allow 6a teams to also play 5a teams.

The playoffs aren’t the issue. Who cares
But the regular season is broken for many teams

They need to go back to the system of enrollment cutoffs and work with the schools that are eligible for the class. If that means 6A is 50 teams, so be it. 6A is actually the class that has the fewest two way players, yet they get the most rest around playoff time. Expand 6A or go back to six classes.

Hockey has 1 team going up to AA and 7 teams going down to A this cycle. They work off enrollments and there is no restriction on who you play.

Which hockey team is being elevated to AA?
