2025-26 Gopher Mens Basketball Roster

He seems like the typical MN kid that in years past ends up at a mid major averaging 20ppg but I only find out about him in the tournament as he leads his team to the sweet 16. I gasp as I mutter under breath “what… this kids from Minnesota”. Then after a quick google search I see he averaged over 30ppg in high school and we never offered him. I throw my phone on the couch in disbelief… I grab my goldy gopher stuffy and I close my eyes and tell myself over and over that one day things will be better… anyway weird story. Why do you guys think he isn’t highly recruited?
Like Nate Wolters, who went to Cornell, and hey, he could play!

maybe something went over my head....but Nate Wolters went to South Dakota State.....
Oops, I got the wrong guy. It was Randy Wittman's son...what was his first name? Ryan!

But Wolters was another who could easily have played in a major conference.

Groves and Wagner are very similar players. Wagner is an inch or so taller and isn't a ball handler, played inside some at Totino anyway as a jr. Groves is a 2 in college, Wagner a 3, probably.

Both are limited with lateral quickness on the defensive end. Not saying their offense and shooting couldn't make it a decent trade off, but that's why they aren't highly rated. When you see players with Gaudy stats in 3A and 4A, and they don't have high offer lists, it's usually because of two questions: will their games transfer to the next level, and/or can they guard a position?

MN could use a player or two like this, but I wouldn't want a roster full of them. My wife is an Iowa fan, and under McCaffrey they would start 5 unathletic but skilled guys, they would put up 85, but they'd give up 90!

It's amazing to me how Lubbock has gone from "Ewww, Lubbock" when Tubby took the job to "Lubbock will be hard to beat for the best recruits." It goes to show how ANYWHERE can become a great basketball destination. Don't listen to any bullshit about how terrible it is here and how nobody would ever want to set foot here.
100%

Lubbock has to be the worst city/location for a Power 4 team. It's an isolated armpit of a city.

Does anyone know why he was relatively lightly recruited with his gaudy stats?
I don’t know but obviously somebody has now told him he can make some coin at a high major or he wouldn’t be passing up a Yale scholly. 6-5 and a sharpshooter works for me…Hoffarber comes to mind.

In today's game Wolters would have cashed in somewhere like....... hate to say it, Wisconsin

He reminds me of a less athletic and slightly worse shooting version of JP Macura. He kind of plays bully ball where he is quick enough to get by most HS forwards and stronger than almost all HS guards. I think coaches see him and they think an athletic 6'5" -6'5" player might lock him up.

All of that said, he is a really smart player and a good passer. I have a hard time envisioning a scenario where he couldn't be quality depth at the wing.

He was healthy to start last season as he played in the exhibition games. He then redshirted as there would not have been any playing time for him last season. Curious if 60's guy thinks he redshirted due to injury, or if there is a new injury I had not heard of.
No, I thought he was injured last year and therefore had no stats to list.

Ivy League does not offer merit-based scholarships of any kind -- academic or athletic. There has been a court case challenging the athletic scholarship ban that I do not believe has been decided yet. The only aid (provided by the actual university) at Ivy League schools is need-based.

Ben Woodside (NDSU via Albert Lea) was a baller, too.
To the younger folk here, Monson took Rico Tucker instead of Woodside, which turned out to be a mistake. The phenomenon of Gopher coaches passing up local kids in favor of flashy players from elsewhere (e.g., Wright versus Washington) has bitten us over the years.

When I was considering transferring from my first college, Texas Tech was one of the destination schools I considered. I discovered that one of the members of the university's advising office was an alumnus so I went to talk to him about the place. His response was: "Not everyone is suited to live in the high plains of West Texas."

I went my first two years to Minnesota-Morris. Same deal.

He isn't a shooter. Most his points come from finishing at the rim due to his strength and footwork. He can shooter but definitely not a Sharpshooter

Sounds like he can spend a year learning from Langston Reynolds then take over his sophomore year.

I'm not the guy to do this but we need one spot to see who we got... So:
1 Isaac Asuma 6-3 FR GOPHERS 5.6 ppg 2.9 reb
2 Grayson Grove 6-9 FR GOPHERS redshirted
3 Kai Shinholster. incoming Freshman
4. Jaylin Crocker-Johnson 6-8 Soph from Colorado St avg 9 ppg 4.4 Reb
5. Robert Vaihola 6-8 JR from San Jose St avg 7.5 ppg 7.5 reb
6. BJ Omot 6-8 JR from California Bears avg 10.8 ppg 3 reb
7. Bobby Durkin 6-7 Soph from Davidson avg 13.5 ppg 5.9 reb
8. Langston Reynolds 6-4 JR from Northern Colorado avg 16.0 ppg 5.6 reb
9. Chansey Willis Jr 6-2 JR from Western Michigan avg 16.8 ppg 4.3 Reb

Proposed new Men's Scholarship limit is 15. It was 13 for men. No walk-ons allowed beyond 15 scholarships.

Who is missing? I'll try and add late night updates as we sign people.
Can you add date signed to know who is fresh addition? Thanks

Hah - I remember touring Morris back in the day. “We have a movie theater!” At least I could have played baseball there…
Very good school with excellent fine arts. I was there for pre-engineering. That was back in the day when only one university in the state had engineering programs.

Do you know who DID play baseball there? Kerry Ligtenberg! He played with my now-brother in law. That's when my sister was there, four years after my Morris stint. During my time there, Basil Meyer was a pitcher on the team. He got as high as AA in the Twins System.

Morris is a lot more desolate than Lubbock. Lubbock is 50 times larger than Morris. It has an international airport. It's not nice, by any means, but the place has every chain restaurant, sushi, dozens of college bars in the same area, etc.

I would hate to live there after I was 22 but it's twice the size of Fargo, it isn't like going to school in Bemidji or Crookston (which might also be fun, i have no idea).

We made our own fun in Morris.
