Gophers tied for 30th (t5th among others receiving votes) in AP Preseason Top 25. Not a bad place to start for a team that didn't make the NCAA tourney last season. Sabreena Merchant of the Athletic is particularly high on the Gophers. Only 3 of 31 AP voters put the Gophers in the top 25, and Merchant voted them 16th.

3. UCLA (705 points)
10. Maryland (461)
13. Michigan (375)
18. USC (235)
21. Iowa (130)
23. Michigan State (103)

26. Washington (79)
27. Ohio State (46)
30. Gophers (15)
35. Illinois (2)
35. Nebraska (2)

Also
32. Kansas (7)

The Gophers were 1 of 11 BIG teams to get at least 1 vote in the Coaches Preseason Poll. The Gophers received 1 vote and tied for 39th.

In the second AP poll, the Gophers are ranked #31, down 1 spot from the pre-season poll. But the Gophers are ranked by 4 voters this week, up from 3 in the pre-season poll. The Gophers biggest supporter in the AP poll, Sabreena Merchant of the Athletic, moved the Gophers down to # 21 from # 16 on her pre-season ballot. Wonder if Heyer and Woodson are responsible for her downgrade.

Gophers are 27 in AP Poll this week, but Talia has them 23.
Six voters have Minnesota on their AP ballot this week:

Unless we call the Seattle guy a Big Ten writer, none of the BIG-affiliated writers are voting for the Gophers:

As much as I want this team to be ranked; I am actually okay with us not being ranked heading into the first road game. Less motivation for the home team lol
If the wins keep coming we will see a ranking soon, and then it will be how do they respond with the national attention.

Bart Torvik pulls in all of the advanced statistics from each game and ranks each team based on those. Based on his algorithm, he currently has Minnesota ranked 13th. He also has our overall strength of schedule for the year ranked 26th nationally (being in the Big Ten obviously helps a lot with that).

Huge Bart Torvik fan (knew him when he lived in the Twin Cities years ago), but his early season rankings reflect, in part, his pre-season rankings, which in turn substantially reflect returning player information. He had Minnesota rated highly pre-season, and Minnesota is doing nothing to prove him wrong.

In the Ken Pom world for MBB, it takes until sometime in mid-January before the impact of pre-season rankings is purged from the rankings. Not sure of the similar date for Torvik.
