2024 MN High School Football thread

Interesting scores in 6A. Some blowouts and some really really close games.

Minnetonka, Blaine, Shakopee, Edina and Maple Grove dominated.

North, Anoka and Mounds View had close games.....Anoka and Mounds View crazy close 1 point victories.

there were four games where a #1 seed was defeated.

remember to set your clocks back one hour Saturday night/early Sunday morning. It will get dark way too freaking early Sunday night.

August 29

Farmington 28
Mounds View 26

October 25

Prior Lake 42
Farmington 14

I think Mounds View is in trouble tonight.
Matchups matter a lot

I would’ve picked farmington over Moundsview but I thought and was correct MV won tonight

When teams 4-20 are all close some matchups are better for some than others

I’m going to go with a final four of

Minnetonka
Anoka
Maple Grove
Shakopee

This is a really balanced final 8.

Yep some can pound and some finesse. If you can’t emulate the opponent in practice it can be tough.

Forest Lake sold out to stop the Blaine QB from running and got torched through the air. 5 TD passes. Anything that could go wrong went wrong for FL. 4 turnovers.

More support that 7/8 seeds need to go away.

Prior Lake went for two and the win and failed. I would've played for OT. Great game.
Champlin Park threw an interception in the endzone to be stopped against Lakeville North.

some of these seedings are a bit odd

MSHSL with another great showing of not caring about MN 'STUDENT" athletes...

Why are any of these games played on Thursday, and try not make it about revenue. Many teams are going to travel 2+ hours on a Thursday night and have school in the morning. If it wasn't just about the almighty dollar these games would all be on Friday night

I went through 9 man and A first round games. For 9 man, there were only two 5 over 4 seed "upsets". That's it, no 6, 7 or 8 seed playing in the 2nd round.

For A, there were five 5 over 4 upsets but that was also it for them.

Many of the 5 over 4 games included at least one team that didn't play a lot of games against teams from their section.
Of the 16 section winners in 9 man and 1A, 15 were #1 or #2 seeds. Only Parkers Prairie as a #3 seed won their section but they could have been easily the 1 or 2 seed.

Hermantown and Orono have to travel to Alexandria to play. Yes, that makes a lot of sense.
(I know schools bid on the playoffs, but still...)

It’s because sections are seeded within the section.

Edina is a 3 seed behind Minnetonka and shakopee

They are not behind anyone else. MV is a 1 seed over forest lake and Stillwater, not over shakopee or Eagan

What’s going on in 5A?

I think the sites are more willing to staff sites on Thursdays.

Some will laugh but it hunting opening weekend.

Sure, but the MSHSL are making sure that these schools don't have much for a crowd. Look at some of these Thursday games... Thursday night at Rock Ridge in Virginia. Parkers Prairie and Upsala Swanville, 2 schools that were in the same conference just a few years back and are omly 40 miles apart. Both traveling 4 hours to play on a Thursday.

I get that its deer hunting, I also get a school district should not put in for a bid and then try make sure they can staff it. Should probably be brought up at a school board meeting and people sign up WAY in advance. Deer hunting is a great MN tradition, and we all know when it starts. NOT an EXCUSE to not be able to staff an event YOU signed up for

Maybe not having games in the FARTHEST corners of the state is a good idea? Or maybe 6A should start having state tournament games up in Bemidji, Roseau and Duluth so some of the ELITES can see what people out state deal with every single year

I don't know the solution as travel is inevitable. You need seats and turf.
Example:
No turf in Mankato. No lights at Gustavus. Those are the 4/5A sites in south central MN.

Maybe the north south split will be considered when reclassing.

Janesville has turf. It is plenty big enough. Owatonna has turf. These playoffs don't get the crowds like they used to.

Often grandparents would rather watch online than travel and sit in the cold.

IMHO its more that we are playing games on Thursday than the distance traveled. A game on a Friday evening and long travel fine, a game on Thursday and long travel, now were are messing with 2 days of school and work...

Why dpses MN love non Friday night games??? Its like MSHSL takes some strange pride in forcing 9man-5A to be different while 6A stays on Friday with the rest of the country. All these teams playing on Thursday evening next week will have played more games not of Friday night than they will have played under the "Friday night lights"

I'm not saying I agree with it, but there are a few valid reasons to have games on Thursday Night.

- Semis at the Zygi Dome start the following Thursday. Teams that play this Thursday have a full week of rest/preparation.

- Teams that play Thursday can host Friday (and vice versa) thus allowing Staff to attend both.

- Potentially allows for coaches (head & assistant) to scout in person.
