2024-25 Gopher Hockey Season

They have looked like that MANY games. They're just not very good.

How bad must all the other teams be? Lots of terrible teams apparently.

Gophers had four regulation losses all season.

That said, it wasn't a great weekend of hockey against Notre Dame. But, they outshot the Irish all weekend, territorially they were mostly better, they missed a shitload of close, outstanding chances but had pretty bad goaltending.

It'll be interesting to see how this team responds. It'll be up to them.

If Coyle does get rid of Motzko, he's gotta make it a 2 fer and take Frost with him. How the hell have our hockey programs come to this? The Gopher women now play second fiddle to Wisconsin and Ohio State in the WCHA. Aren't we the state of hockey?

Do Frost this year and Motzko next

Shaky goaltending all weekend even in the win. Airey was fighting the puck. OSU lost to Michigan in football and were pilloried locally and nationally for two weeks. The Gophers will take their hits the next three weeks. Let’s see if the team can find some resolve like the football Buckeyes. Soliere is the goalie—it was a mistake not to play him today and allow him to exorcise his yips.

I wonder if Motzko tragically losing his son has affected his overall performance as a coach?

That last line is terrifying. They got us frustrated with how hard they battled. That’s such an indictment on a team that doesn’t want to work hard. They just want to skate slalom through the neutral zone so a toe drag and score.

Huglen is the only Gopher in the top 17 in faceoffs won in Big Ten play. MSU has three in the top 12. OSU and PSU have three in the top 17. Gophers are fucked.

Do you know where your beloved BC team ranks in face-off %? 53rd in the nation, which is worse than the Gophers. So I guess they are F'd also? ( I'm sure you will come back with some cleaver response about goaltending, even though that wasn't part of your post )

Suppose you can make up for that when you are a much better hockey team...

14-3-1 in 2025
vs
10-7-2 in 2025 never stringing together even three wins in a row since early December.

BC is at full strength and got to their record with the players they have going in to the tournament. Minnesota just lost the only forward they have that can be decent at important draws in the tournament against better teams.

Ah, missed Oliver Moore who was 7th in Big Ten con. So he's gonna be the guy for all big draws. Not as fucked, just in trouble cuz Pahlsson blows at faceoffs.

You are even more entertaining when you have been drinking.

Chaos in HE impending. BC gone in the quarters to NE. Gophers really need a wmu loss in the semis next week to hang onto the 4. A Maine loss to NE also likely does the trick

XG were 5-2.2 but yes this is the joy of a 1 and done.

Love the typical loser attitudes as the Gophers watch the 1 seed slip away and people act like we didn't want it anyways.

Meanwhile UND playing their best hockey and two games away from getting in

Who has these "loser attitudes"? I have yet to see anyone post anything resembling the "we didn't want the #1 seed anyway." For my part, I am still steamed about the awful weekend vs Notre Dame. I won't be happy if we miss a #1 seed. But I frankly don't think we deserve it after the way the season ended.

Not so much here but elsewhere

Are we on the verge of losing our 1 seed if Western Michigan wins the NCHC?

You think 1-1 next weekend and Western hops us?
given bonin's answer leaves some things to be desired, it depends.

NCHC is pending DU vs CC. Provided all regulation for results as gets muddier if OT. If CC wins, WMU gets CC then the winner of ASU-ND. In this scenario...
WMU beats CC, loses to ND. Probably finish behind us
WMU beats CC, loses to ASU, they may still finish ahead as ASU is a full 0.01 ahead of UND in RPI

DU beats CC then...
WMU beats UND but loses to DU, probably are ok.
WMU beats UND but loses to ASU, it's going to be the same as above

WMU goes 2-0 vs whoever and are 100% ahead of us. WMU loses, that one's obvious as well. It still gets hairy even if WMU loses their first because of what's left in HE. Was easier when BC was alive and could've knocked out Maine and BU/UConn.

Out in HE, kind of depends on how you want to play it. Simplest version is you cheer for Maine to lose to NE. They'll drop below us (and WMU at that). Problem is then you end up with either Uconn or BU being able to pass us with winning the title and you're back to hoping WMU loses and drops barely behind us.

So to be simple, cheer for whoever WMU plays in the semis and then NE. If those both happen, we're locked for the 1. Pretty much any other result and it'll be dependent on the finals.

Ah so Maine could still fall below us again if they lose? Didn't consider that. Thanks for the write up.

Yeah NE still sits in the land of being a pwr hit. Even if they win out, wont be enough to get their rpi high enough to make it not take enough away from Maine to be behind us. It’s why the majority of their finishes in the matrix are still lower than 3

That’s awesome, we should totally be trying to emulate a program that has one NCAA tournament win in the last 8 years.

The result I think most possible ends up in pairwise madness...

Something like
Manchester: BC/Holy Cross, DU/Providence
Toledo: MSU/Mankato, Uconn/OSU
Allentown: BU/PSU (brutal for BU), WMU/Qpac
Fargo: Maine/UM, UMN/UMass

Ben Barr coming out west to audition for the Gopher job in that case...

Like WMU to beat ND but DU to still get the NCHC and Maine over UConn in HE with ECAC same, AHA same, CCHA same, B10 same. I end up with

Manchester: BC/HC, DU/Prov
Toledo: MSU/MI (bracket integrity would go this way and think they "protect" BC with the AHA winner no matter what), BU/QU
Allentown: Maine/PSU, UConn/OSU
Fargo: MN/Kato, WMU/UMass

Lots of tight teams around the seed cutlines which will make this get pretty wild in moving teams around. If Gophers get the regional you (or I for that matter) suggest, I really like our chances
