Big Ten Announces Minnesota Conference Opponents for 2024-2028

The Big Ten announced today the conference opponents that Minnesota will play in 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028.

The 2024 season will be the first that will feature Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington as Big Ten members in the soon-to-be, 18-team conference. It will also be the first season that will feature no divisional format.

The Big Ten will continue to play nine conference games, which is something that the conference has done since 2016. Today's announcement also ensured that all 18 schools will play each conference opponent at least twice – one game at home and one on the road – in a five-year cycle.

The conference also announced 12 protected rivalry games that will be played every year in the Big Ten. Minnesota has two protected matchups, as it will continue to play Wisconsin and Iowa every season. The Minnesota-Wisconsin game is the most played game in Big Ten history, while the Minnesota-Iowa game is tied for the fourth-most played game in conference history.

The 2024 season will conclude with the annual Big Ten Football Championship Game, which will feature the top two teams in the overall conference standings at the end of the regular season, with the winner earning the Big Ten Championship. Tiebreaking procedures will be announced later.

The game dates for the 2024 football schedule will be announced later this year.

Per Pat Forde, the B1G released its conference schedules for the 2024-28 seasons, which now include the four former PAC-12 teams with 9 games alternating yearly in a 5/4 and 4/5 home/road setup. Here's the Gophers' schedule for each year:

2024:
Home: Iowa, Maryland, Penn St,, USC
Away: Illinois, Michigan, Rutgers, UCLA (Rose Bowl!), Wisconsin

2025:
Home: Michigan St., Nebraska, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin
Away: Iowa, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon

2026:
Home: Iowa, Michigan, Northwestern, UCLA
Away: Indiana, Penn St., Purdue, Washington, Wisconsin

2027:
Home: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio St., Washington, Wisconsin
Away: Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, USC

2028:
Home: Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, Oregon
Away: Michigan St., Ohio St., Rutgers, UCLA, Wisconsin

I’m glad Michigan away was preserved next year.

I’ll probably pencil in UCLA away for 2028. Not gonna do it next year. Will go to Michigan instead.

Wisconsin plays them both twice but plays Oregon and USC both 3 times

High risk - high reward type of stuff.

But yeah, looks like cupcakes are off the menu...
 

I don't think we have much to complain about. The B1G has gotten better with the PAC additions, so it's going to be a more difficult schedule. We get Wisconsin and Iowa each year - nice to see that happening. Plus we don't have both Ohio State and Michigan in any season. We only play Oregon twice over the five years, same with USC and PSU.
 

It’s an 18 team conference with at least 8 teams in a “perennial top 25” type tier, and they’re saying everyone will play everyone at least twice over any five year period.

That first year, 2024, we draw 4 of what I call the beasts. All other years it’s only 3. The bad part about 2024 is the home conference slate is also only 4 games. Overall, excited to see these games and how it turns out.

Once you fill in the current slated non-cons against UNC, Miss St, Cal, etc it starts to look like the hardest schedules we've ever seen the Gophers play.
 

By the way, you can tell they’re still doing 3 “locked in” but where they change it up every two years for non-permanent rivalries.

Reason being we have a third team that we see both years of first two two-year periods. 24/25 it’s Rutgers and 26/27 it’s Washington.
 

10 conf games makes it so much cleaner.

But guessing no one had the appetite to be the first conf to make that jump.

Damn, you’re right. I didn’t even factor that in.

Not that it’ll be easy, but UNC at home next year without Maye is much more manageable. I expect to win that game. Mississippi State and Cal, while no cupcakes, are certainly winnable at home and on the road, but I definitely get your point. There may only be one game, perhaps two, where you can catch your breath.

That was going to be the case anyways though. Not new to Oregon and Washington additions.

Adding Oregon and Washington means you see more teams twice every 5 years instead of twice every 4 years.
For the gophers…the additions mean they see Oregon and Washington more.
They see Nebraska, USC, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan state, penn state, Purdue, northwestern, and Michigan less

We also see Rutgers, Maryland, and Ohio State the same 60% of the time instead of 50% of the time.
