The brackets are set. The Minnesota Gophers begin their ascent to 2023 NCAA champions.

Or we hope. The Gophers are #1 in the nation with a great shot at the title. This is the culmination of several years of strong hockey under coach Bob Motzko.

The Gophers have not won a NCAA championship in years. Now is the best shot to get it.

#1 Gophers open the tournament against Canisius Thursday in the Fargo regional. And then the winner advances to the Saturday game in the Fargo regional.

When is the last time a team lost their conference tournament but was still the #1 overall seed in the NCAA tourney?

I don't have the answer but I would have to imagine it happens quite often.
EDIT: Looks like it happened in 2019 most recently. Before that 2018. Before that 2017.

Western beat handily. Denver down 2 in 3rd to Cornell. Maybe East Coast hockey stronger than being credited for.

Everyone knew Canisius was going to pack it in and try to muck up the game as much as possible to keep it close. That worked ok for a period and a half, but eventually the talent and skill disparity is going to give out, like it did last night.

The major was the turning point. What a foolish mistake.

Yeah but I'd say even without the major we end up winning 6-2 or something along those lines. That certainly ended the game at that point more or less though.

Well that didn’t wear well!

Agree, but during the first period that was the case. Something ignited them around mid-second period. Maybe they got their legs but the tempo went way up and turnovers in their own end stopped.

Maybe it was the coach?
