2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

I know it won't happen, but if CBJ really wanted to make a statement, he would land Jameer Nelson Jr, another PG with 2 years left at least like Mike Mitchell Jr, and another Big Guy for 5/4 position.

Even if we could get Nelson, he might require a waiver. Now, I realize they hand them out like candy these days.

I’m guessing he’s a grad transfer, with 1 yr. If so, They don’t require waivers.

Since he was at George Washington with Jamison Battle, I would guess it’s nice to have the level of due dilligence done. And a potential connection.

Well, they didn't list that but at 7'2" it must be pretty good
That reminds of Bobby Knight talking about one of his bigs, can't think of his name, like 6'11" but had a wingspan of someone shorter! Claimed the reason for his height was his neck was too long.

Regarding Columbia, I don’t know and I really don’t care sport

So what does an erudite gent, such as yourself, consider superior and why (be very specific as to why it is better)?

Criticizing something without providing a reasonable alternative is disingenuous at best and intellectually dishonest at worst.
For 2020 and 2021 Columbia was ranked in #3 in USNWR. In 2022 they were absent. Why?

A Columbia University professor became a whistleblower exposing how they manipulated the "survey" used to rank the schools to falsely increase their rank. A common method used by schools across the country. The most infamous being Northeastern University.

This article predates the Columbia scandal.

The manipulation of "data" was easy and commonplace. The methodology of their "survey" changes annually, and I remember at one time, they based their ranking by placing 10% of the overall grade to a "survey of high school academic advisors" - wow...such a scientific and inarguably accurate method. And 5% was attributed to "peer review", you know, the process used to deem an article, experiment, mathematical solution, etc. academically acceptable.

Columbia was subsequently placed at #18 at the beginning of this academic year after a lot of handwringing and haranguing.

I do not know a serious academic who puts any trust in their sham popularity contest.

I don't know of a single best ranking system. The Princeton review uses rankings from 160,000 actual students to generate their list. Most recent students I have come across put more faith in Niche.

I personally favor the CWUR (Center for World University Rankings). Their methodology.

Good enough for you, sport? <- Note the proper use of the comma before "sport". Sport.

They have known for a couple of months how badly they are going to need guards...so I assume they have some good intel on guys they hoped would become available. It's no secret that guys who have great years at the mid major or lower level are thinking about the chance to move up to the bigger leagues- so I would think our staff was ready with what that list could look like.
Kinda like last year ... And you see what we got for guards....

I’m sure you’ll enlighten us,,,,,,, ( 2 many??!???) ace

Vaguely remember it, but in the panoply of scandals, this ranks towards the bottom, for moi (that’s French, mon ami)

Wasn’t aware of methodology and that obviously wasn’t the crux of my supposition.

Where pray tell, did I claim to be a serious academic or an academic of any strip for that matter?

The point was that MN is a better school than SDSU - I’m guessing that other sources would concur with the rankings I presented.

You wild animal with a keyboard. 🔒 up you loved ones, Ruh roh!!

Glad you could point out a infinitesimal grammatical error, but be completely unable to follow the spine of my argument or make a fallacious argument of your own, in an effort to discredit me and mind🤣 intellect. My guess is you’re an academic- middle school English teacher, per chance?

Anywho, I’ve been called worse by better posters than thou! So if taking shots at me makes you feel happy, glad I can contribute to your joy - no charge, champ🤠

Well, I'm not sure about grad transfers. The rules I read indicate that they have some other hoops to jump through besides having earned a degree if they had transferred previously without sitting out (which Nelson did). Now, I have little doubt that there are fuzzy loopholes and questionable enforcement that could make the rules virtually meaningless.

Here's a shooting guard prospect from Bryant. He'd be a one-year player. We had a Charlie Daniels so why not a Charlie Pride?

Charles Pride

He's from Syracuse so at least he can say that it doesn't snow as much here as it does in his home town.

You forgot about the Minnesota exception to the rules

I like that logic.

It must be 🍌 to have to sift through all of these portalers

I wonder if Ben has a war room of some sort?

SIAP

From Illinois. Played with Cam Christie's brother in AAU. Scored 25 @ Miami.

Pretty good numbers for a freshman. He is from Illinois (Bloomington so not close to Christie) but he did his final high school year at a hoity toity boarding school in Ohio (Western Reserve Academy).

Would be a solid pickup you’d think. Only a freshman this year.

Hopefully within range for us.

I really don’t know what our range is.

Definitely. A safety valve if we can't get Jackson.

Don't think about "our range." That would only depress you.:)

Elvis Nnaji has just entered the portal, transferring from George Mason. 6’9” from TC. Big body.

Don't need him. Too many forwards already. He also did nothing this year at George Mason. Played a total of 52 minutes, shot 27% from the field, and was 0-7 from the free throw line. He did pick up 12 rebounds in 52 minutes so I guess that's all right for garbage time anyway.

Thx for pointing that out. Need a center who can rebound and block shots.
