Well, 1st, it's a blog. Meaning it's some guy (or gal) just winging it.

And 2nd - if you read the thing, their worst case for the Gophers is 7-5, and they predict 8-4, but could be 9-3 with some breaks.

they also like the Gophers offense a lot.

The bone of contention is the defense. Whoever is behind the blog does not expect the defense to be improved over 2020.

Now, most of the people on this board could whip out a quick 1,000 words on why the defense will be better - but on the national stage, most bloggers or writers are not doing an extensive review of the Gophers' personnel. They look at last year's results - "Gophers weren't very good on defense," and that's what they go with.

In other words, it's up to the Gophers to change the perception by showing they can play better defense.

If the Gophers have a strong defensive showing against Ohio State, that will go a long way toward changing those perceptions.

On the other hand, if things do not go well against OSU, expect a raft of articles around the theme of "defense will be Gopher's downfall in 2021."

Gophers really need better play up the middle at all 3 levels. Started to get better at level 2 towards the end of the year…

What is Flecks record with AWJ playing a full game vs being out or getting injured mid game? Honest question. Not a criticism of him. But safety play can make a solid defense great and bad safety play can make an otherwise solid defense horrible at giving up the big play

The defense will undoubtedly be better, but seriously, they could hardly be worse than last year. One thing I'm excited about is that the run defense should be much-improved with Oliver returning and the additions of Gibbens and Pinckney (who's been playing in the SEC and looked studly in the Spring game). OTOH, I don't see how the pass rush is a ton better than last year. Rossi will need to get creative to generate pressure, but that puts a lot on your fairly pedestrian DBs (Durr excepted).

Bottom line for me this year is the offense should be good enough (and run defense improved enough) to keep MN in every game. Hopefully improved special teams (huge question mark), a few breaks here and there, and the emergence of legit players at WR 2, CB 2, and S will lead to a special season.
