2019 College Football Coach Fired/Hired Thread

Yes, fired 2yrs later, but paid $7.5 million to leave. Some would call that success
Well, frankly I'd be more than willing to pay a head coach $7.5 million to go away 2 years later if they brought a National Championship, assuming the U got to keep it (looking your way, USC). I'm sure Auburn wanted more from him, but in the grand scheme of things he worked out pretty well for them, plus he got a pretty good payday.

P5 to P5 success story....... Gene Chizik went from ISU to Auburn and won a National Championship within 2yrs after they won the Cam Newton sweepstakes.
"Won" .... "paid off" .... anyway

Wow! That would be cool. UNLV does have a new football facility and will be playing in the Raider's new stadium next season, but its still an enormous re-build. I also don't see how UNLV could pay him, but who knows??

Vegas can always use sports attractions as a reason to get people into town and spending at the Casinos.

It would take decades to build UNLV up into a major research institution, to the level where the PAC would bite. But if they wanted to go that route, they could fund it. (Casino owners)

Fertitta

Mendenhall

Time to write some more checks! Unfortunately, I don't think the Mendenhall's care as much about football as about basketball, and since the old man passed away, maybe the kids aren't as eager to throw their money at the school?

Steve Addazzio to Colorado State.

Steve Addazzio to Colorado State.

Stupid hire.

When is CO St gonna pull their head out of their butts and hire an HC that was a winner at his previous job?? New stadium going to waste.

I don't see this mentioned, but Eli Drinkwitz to Missouri.

UNLV ends up with Marcus Arroyo.

Sam Pittman to Arkansas. I'm guessing this hire doesn't move the needle in Arkansas.

Love the hires of successful G5 head coaches. Think that's really the best way. Not a fan of hiring coordinators at P5, let alone assistant coaches (I mean that as not even a coordinator). Sam Pittman?? OL coach from Georgia? *smh*

Might turn out to be the greatest Arkansas coach in history, but I doubt it.

Head coach is sales and motivation, and managing the staff. It's not X's and O's and it's not hands on development of players.

It's crazy that Arkansas has not won a SEC game in about 3 years. It's also crazy that they could not bring in anything more than a position coach with all that Walton and Jerruh money.

Regardless, I hope Pittman succeeds.

If anything, I would guess that Jerry has too much say in who gets hired, and he has his head up his a__ about who he needs it to be.

Arranda would be a good hire for them. I’m surprised no bigger school has gone after him yet.

Was not he on our "wish list" after Claeys was let go?

Boston College hires Ohio State co-Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley.

Ogee, I'm sure that you have seen that we ended up with this guy. What do you think? https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?pli=1#inbox/FMfcgxwGCHBTMRgJHtTsmCmMjnFDnNvX
I think he has a shot to do well with UNLV. I sure hope so. He has some major advantages over previous coaches; playing in the new Raiders stadium instead of way out at Sam Boyd and the new football complex. And with the Raiders coming, maybe football in this town increases a little bit more and people want to go to the Rebel games more.

I think their attendance is going to go way, WAY up starting next year, with both more visiting fans wanting to see the Raiders stadium and more Vegas fans wanting to check out the Rebels and the new stadium. For a LOT of people, unfortunately, their best chance at seeing the new stadium will be Rebel football games; the Raiders games are going to be really costly for the average fan.

I'm no expert but I think the Rebels playing their games way out at Sam Boyd was just a massive, massive obstacle to building a program at UNLV. The stadium is barely 10 minutes from my house and I went to ONE UNLV home football game there since I've been here. It's just a complete dump, along with the terrible logistics of attending games, most notably parking.

Good luck to Coach Arroyo!!

Hey, you've seen as many games there as I have then! 1999 or 2000, I went with a couple buddies for Iowa St - UNLV because I had a friend playing for ISU. My first time in Vegas. Man was that overwhelming. Didn't stop me from returning about 10 times over the next decade, however.

And so the assistant coach carousel begins. PJ spoke really highly of him, but I'm sure they can find someone equally as effective. I hope, at least...

San Diego State chimes in:

San Diego State coach Rocky Long retires from position, Brady Hoke takes over Aztecs' program

The college football coaching carousel has nearly come to a stop, but not before throwing one more school into motion. In one of the more surprising moves, San Diego State coach Rocky Long announced on Wednesday that he was retiring from his position. The Aztecs are coming off a 10-3 season with a win in the New Mexico Bowl.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that the decision stemmed from San Diego State's administration wanting Long to consider staff changes, which Long was unwilling to do. Despite tremendous success with the Aztecs, Long's teams finished 112th or worse in scoring offense in each of the past two seasons.

In his place will step the man he replaced as Brady Hoke will take over the Aztecs program, the school also announced on Wednesday.

Since taking over for Hoke in 2011, Long has led the Aztecs to nine straight winning seasons and three Mountain West conference titles. San Diego State has enjoyed lots of recent success, too, with four 10-win seasons in the past five years, including back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2015 and '16. Overall, he leaves San Diego State No. 2 all time in wins at 81, just behind Don Coryell. He previously coached New Mexico from 1998 to 2008 with a 65-69 record.

Go Aztecs!!
