UCLA is first out of the gate:

UCLA has fired coach Steve Alford, according to multiple reports.

Officials at UCLA have not responded to ESPN's request for comment. An official announcement is expected Monday.

Alford was in charge of the Bruins for five and a half seasons, leading them to four NCAA tournaments and three Sweet 16 appearances. This season, however, UCLA struggled mightily in nonconference play. The Bruins are just 7-6 after losing their past four games. Things hit rock bottom on Saturday, when UCLA lost at home by 15 points to Liberty.

"This might be one of the most disappointing games I've had," Alford said following the Liberty loss. "Trying to reflect back throughout 28 years, and the word disappointment of just our team and how we performed. I don't know the last time I was this disappointed in a team. It did not look like us at any level, as far as how we prepped, how we practiced, how we watched film, things that we've done. The execution was extremely poor at both ends. Just very disappointed in how we played."

Jerry Kill gets to make a hire: SIU basketball coach announces he's stepping down in emotional press conference: 'I am so sorry'

Moments after SIU's men's basketball team lost its chance to win its first Missouri Valley Conference tournament in 13 years on Friday night, it lost its coach, too.

Barry Hinson, the dean of the Valley and fifth in conference history in league victories, stepped away from the Salukis in a tearful goodbye at the end of his postgame press conference. Third-seeded SIU lost to sixth-seeded Northern Iowa 61-58 in the final quarterfinal of the day. Hinson did not say if he resigned or was fired during his goodbye, saying only "It is time for me to step away."

Hinson let seniors Armon Fletcher and Kavion Pippen, who took questions alongside him during the postgame press conference as is the protocol at the MVC tournament, leave the table before saying goodbye to SIU and the Valley after 16 seasons. Hinson said at the end of last season, when SIU missed the postseason for the 10th straight year after getting beat in overtime by Illinois State, he made a "pact" with former SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno that if he did not make the NIT or the NCAA Tournament this season he would step away.

Montemagno died last October while battling cancer at the age of 62. The athletic director at the time last season ended, Tommy Bell, has since been replaced by Jerry Kill. Hinson did not take questions after his speech at the table. He stepped down and fell into Kill's arms just down the stairs. The two embraced for a few minutes, then left through a side door without taking questions.

Hinson has one year left on his contract, which runs through the 2019-2020 season, after signing an extension in 2016. He makes about $350,000 a year, plus annual university increases and incentives, but his buyout for next season is only $175,000. It is not clear yet if SIU will pay Hinson the remaining amount of his deal or have made an agreement.

Hinson went 116-111 in seven seasons at SIU and 321-251 overall as a head coach at Oral Roberts, Missouri State and in Carbondale. He has never reached the NCAA Tournament as a Division I head coach, although he is also part of two of the biggest snubs by the NCAA selection committee in history. Hinson's 2005-06 club that went 22-9 and finished tied for second in the MVC, was left out of the NCAA Tournament despite an RPI of 21, the highest of any team in the history of the tournament to not get in as an at-large or automatic bid. His 22-11 squad the following season achieved an RPI of 36 and was left out.

"If you quote me on one thing, I'd like for you to quote me on this," Hinson said, his voice shaking. "I am so sorry. I am so sorry that we couldn't get back to the tournament. It's haunted me my entire life. And I'm a man of faith, and my dad taught me a long time ago I know not what my future holds, but I know who holds my future."

So is Kill using the opportunity to “upgrade”? Seems like Jerry could talk him into staying if he wanted. Is this a chink in his loyalty mantra?

Texas A&M was in the Sweet 16 two out of the last four years. Only 2 winning conference records in 8 seasons must have done Kennedy in. Can you imagine the outcry on here if Pitino was fired after 2 recent Sweet 16's? Texas A&M doesn't have great basketball history either.

Mercer men’s basketball coach Bob Hoffman fired after losing season


The Mercer Bears have parted ways with head coach Bob Hoffman after finishing the season 11-20 and losing to Furman in the team’s first game of the SoCon Tournament.

The announcement was made Monday morning in a press release from Mercer Athletics.

“Coach Hoffman has made an indelible mark on the Mercer basketball program,” Mercer Athletic Director Jim Cole said in the release. “Bob always ran his program and mentored his student-athletes in a first-class manner that represented our university well.”

ESPN: William & Mary parts with Shaver after 16 seasons

William & Mary is parting ways with men's basketball coach Tony Shaver after 16 seasons, the school announced Wednesday.

Shaver, 65, had been in charge of the Tribe since 2003. He never reached the NCAA tournament but shared the CAA regular-season title in 2015. William & Mary had finished in the top four of the conference in each of the six seasons before this one, winning 20 games three years in a row from 2014 to 2016.

Overall, William & Mary was 212-251 under Shaver heading into this season, when the Tribe finished 14-17 (10-8 in the CAA).

Athletic director Samantha K. Huge said in a statement that Shaver "is a teacher not just a coach and his impact on hundreds of young men will be felt by them for years to come. However, we have high expectations for our men's basketball program, including participating in the NCAA Tournament, and we will not shy away from setting the bar high.''

Mike Dunleavy - fired from Tulane. He replaced Ed Conroy, with the program taking a pretty big dive after Conroy's tenure.
