With the season just a week plus change away, it's time to transition from the off-season thread to the in-season thread.

Report: Twins expected to re-sign Mauer to short-term deal next winter

All signs are pointing to Joe Mauer being a Minnesota Twin for life.

The 34-year-old is entering the final season of an eight-year, $184-million extension, but it looks likely the two sides will agree to a one- or two-year deal this winter to keep Mauer in Minnesota, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Mauer stated his desire to remain with the Twins last month, saying he could never see himself wearing another uniform.

"No, not really, to be honest," Mauer said when asked if he could see himself with another team next season. "This is where I want to be. This is where my family is, where my daughters are growing up. I have no intention of going anywhere else. Hopefully it doesn't come to that."

Born in St. Paul and drafted by Minnesota with the first pick in the 2001 MLB Draft, Mauer has spent his entire 14-year career with the Twins. He currently sits ninth on the franchise list in games played and RBIs, eighth in hits, fifth in on-base percentage, and fourth in doubles.

Uh UH. Not good news for the Twins.

Never fails.
Never fails.
Never fails.

Wonder if the Twins knew about this when they signed Aybar. That signing that made little sense at the time makes more sense now.

Minnesota sports fans get so optimistic about their teams lately. Gopher hoops. Vikings. Wolves. Now the Twins. The sports God will not put up with it.

Polanco can’t play in the postseason now too, right?

We are Minnesota sports fans. We can handle this:banghead:

I guess Polanco has know for about a month but just told the Twins. Someone on twitter said he couldn't tell the team until now due to union rules? Not sure if that part is true.

Same thing happened with Santana so it seems to be the case. I think they can't disclose it while it's being appealed?

And its the same old story - "My trainer gave me the pills - said they were vitamins and supplements."

Jeez - as a professional athlete - in a sport with a fairly strong drug-testing protocol - you have to be responsible for everything you put into your body. The "I didn't know what was in the supplement" defense just doesn't work anymore.

Having said that, this seems to happen a lot more with players from Latin countries. Not saying Polanco is dumb - but maybe unsophisticated is a better description. Trusted the wrong people, and it's going to cost him.

This was almost certainly an injection. You basically are trusting the person giving it to you. But you'd think given the # of times it's happened before they'd teach these guys to be more careful.

STrib: Jake Odorizzi takes Opening Day start for Twins seriously

Thursday is Opening Day for the Twins.

To Jake Odorizzi, it's like any other day.

"I'm not going to view myself as a different pitcher now that I'm an Opening Day starter," he said. "[I'm] just ready to do my job and do it for the other 24 guys on the team."

Wait a second. What about the pomp and circumstance? The bunting flowing throughout the ballpark? The introductions and the flyovers, not to mention the star power that is summoned for the first pitch and national anthem?

Kids get out of school for this, you know. It's kind of a big deal.

Plus the Twins tabbed Odorizzi, who turns 28 Tuesday, to take the ball as they start their playoff quest at Baltimore.

I've been a big Vargas backer. I just want to see him get 500-600 AB's in the majors.

To the smart baseball minds on this board: Does the lack of teams wanting to have Vargas on their opening day roster an indication of how many good 1B/DH bats are out there? Seems like there should be some bad teams out there happy to start Vargas everyday and see what he has. He is cheap
