And then there were none; Nebraska, the last undefeated B1G team, lost in Madison. The Husker's tried to reprise their five set come from behind victory over the Badger's in Lincoln; but Wisconsin overcame some fourth set shakiness to prevail.


The Nebraska volleyball team had its undefeated start to the Big Ten Conference season come to an end with a four-set loss against No. 11 Wisconsin on Wednesday in Madison, Wisconsin.

NU could never recover from a disastrous first two sets as its seven-match winning streak come to an end.

Fourth-ranked Nebraska (13-4, 6-1 Big Ten) now drops back to the pack in the Big Ten standings and joins Penn State and Michigan State as teams with just one loss in league play.

Sophomore outside hitter Madison Duello had 13 kills, and 6-foot-8 freshman middle blocker Dana Rettke added 12 kills with a .500 hitting percentage to lead the Badgers to a 25-16, 25-15, 17-25, 25-23 victory to end a three-match losing streak.
 

Winning a wild third set helped #2 Penn State (6-1) defeat #10 Michigan State (5-2) in Happy Valley 25-17, 15-25, 30-28, 25-18.

Penn State and Nebraska are now 6-1.

Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue and Illinois are 5-2.

Love all the parity this year. We are so young that I am hoping that translates into us playing loose all the way.
 

On Friday, Rutgers snapped a 9 match streak in the Big Ten of not winning a set. They lost to Michigan 3-1. Their losing streak in the Big Ten is up to 39 straight matches after losing to Michigan State on Saturday. They are 1-67 in conference matches since joining the Big Ten.

Did I just hear this right during the broadcast? Out of 86 meetings in volleyball, Iowa has only won 11 times?! Damn.

Yep, you heard right. Although now, the official record is 76-11 after today's match. [emoji4]

Yeah, it's quite incredible. I think I heard that at one point, the Gophers had won something like 40 in a row or something bizarre like that. Either that, or they hadn't lost to the Hawkeyes in like 20 years.

Anyway, it was something mind-boggling along those lines.

Minnesota took a nice tidy road win in Columbus sweeping the Buckeyes -15, -20, -18. Minnesota cruised in the first set while the second and third sets required mid-set runs to leverage a lead. The Gopher block forced Ohio State into some pretty effective tips; but tipping wasn't enough to save the Buckeyes. On offense, Seliger-Swenson had plenty of options. Samedy led the team with 16 kills (.289) and Hart contributed 11 (.250). Pittman was terrific with 8 kills (.467). Samedy also had 12 digs for her double.

Wisconsin traveled to Maryland and swept the Terps. The Saturday Gopher and Badger rematch at the PAV will be fun.

SSS averaged 14 aps (42 assists in 3 sets). Well on her way to a second straight SOTW award.
 

I'm pretty much a volleyball novice; so here are some questions to folks in the know: 1) a website on VB terminology says a libero is a defensive player who can substitute for any player but cannot serve. However, Rosado serves for the Gophers. Why is she allowed to serve? 2) What is an overpass? Is it a pass from the setter to a hitter or is it a hit/spike? 3) Wilhite was a 6-rotation player last year. How do the rotations work in VB? How are the substitutions set up?

Libero can serve. They can only play in the back row (meaning they can't play up at the net).

I'm also a volleyball novice so that's all I can answer. :D

1) Any player who is in the match is eligible to serve (doesn't mean they all will though as some get subbed out for their service rotation).

2) An overpass is when a player accidentally passes or "digs" a ball too far and it goes over the net onto the opposing side. Often times, they just end up barely overpassing (on accident), and the ball goes over the net where the opposing team's player just puts it right back down for a kill.

3) Essentially, substitutions for a 6-rotation player are non-existent. Meaning they stay in the game for all 6 rotations (3 in the front and 3 in the back). Subs happen every time you win a point off of the opposition's serve. Once 3 consecutive rotations pass, you either sub from the back row to the front row (up on the net) or vice versa for the next 3 rotations with the exception being the libero. The libero stays in the back row the whole time.

A 3-rotation player is either or DS (who only plays in the back row) or a hitter/blocker who only plays in the front row (besides maybe their serving rotation). Example: Jasmyn Martin is a hitter who isn't quite adept at floor defense/passing. When it's her turn to rotate to the back row, Lauren Barnes subs in to play defense for her for those three rotations.
 

And in the NCAA there are a maximum of 15 substitutions per set. Libero substitutions do not count toward that total.
 


An example of an overpass; Santana serves; the dig comes back over the net (the overpass) and, as a bonus, Tori Dixon smashes down for the kill.

International volleyball only allows 6 subs per set. Therefore, there are less specialists in the international game.
 

We're on tv again tomorrow night in case any of you want to catch the match. For whatever reason, we seem to own Wisconsin these last few years. They just can't beat us even though they are a top 10 team. Tomorrow will be interesting. We actually have a very favorable schedule the rest of the way.
 

Another football/volleyball double header. It's the second time we've played the Badgers in the volleyball night cap. Hopefully, there are no lightning delays and we don't get too soaked at the football game.

Gophers continue their recent mastery of the Badgers, winning in four sets. I may be mistaken, but i think that's six in a row over Wisconsin for Hugh and the ladies.

Hart hitting her angles and Gophers staying in system better to close out the match. Big has so much parity this year making many of the matches more competitive.
 

That was a fun hot late October night in the PAV. Hitting outside, Hart was the hammer and Martin was a pest. Seliger-Swenson, fired up all night, appropriately got the final put away. Rettke continued her terrific Freshman year for the Badgers-getting her rotated quickly off the court was important. Samedy started slowly; but she really has become the backbone of the team

If Rettke is so essential to Wisconsin's offense, which she clearly is, why don't they play her all six rotations? That would mean she'd be in for all the important moments when they desperately need kills, as late in set 4. Is Rettke totally lacking in defensive skills?
 

I also noticed that MN kept serving to one WI player on the back row to the right side. Was that WI player an especially weak returner?
