2017 Gopher Baseball Season Thread

Indiana gets a leadoff single off Shannon and Gophers go to Fred Manke. Manke walks the next batter on 4 pitches.

Flyout to center and double off the trail runner trying to tag to 2nd. Runner on 3rd 2 outs.

Manke strikes out Sowers and leaves the tying run at 3rd! Gophers Win!

Indiana kid with a meltdown in the dugout. Glad it happened. The kid is a punk. His body language during the whole tourney was that of a dick.

I feel the same about Miller he got hit by a slow breaking ball from Shannon in the regular season series with bases loaded and wanted to charge the mound and was constantly yapping during the series despite not doing a whole lot.

Heck of a comeback win. Nebraska loses for the double bonus. Who will start today?

Reggie Meyer will get game 1. Lineup shows no Terrin Vavra this morning which shifts Luke Pettersen to SS and Riley Smith in at 2B big loss there gotta think it is his back causing problems again. Eli Wilson will start behind the plate and Troy Traxler will start at DH again with Iowa starting a lefty.

Gophers score first with a Pettersen walk followed by singles from Coffey and Hanson. Couldn't come through with the 2 out hit this time and leave runners at 2nd and 3rd.

Iowa answers with a hit by pitch followed by a 2 run homerun before Meyer settles in to get the next with with a pair of fly outs and a strikeout. Ball looks to be carrying very well again today which seems pretty common at Indiana.

Gophers retake the lead in the top of the 3rd. Infield single from Kozicky, double down the line from Pettersen to score him, singles from Coffey and Hanson, sac bunt from Stemper, and a single from Jordan Smith to make it 4-2 with Iowa going to the bullpen. Gophers still have 1st and 3rd with 1 out and Estrada will pinch hit for Traxler with Iowa bringing in a righty. Estrada grounds into a fielders choice and the Gophers get another run 5-2 headed to the bottom of the 3rd.

Lovin' the updates, GG. Keep 'em coming, and sincere thanks.

Bunt single from Wilson, line drive single up the middle from Kozicky, Iowa pitcher tries to make the play at 3rd on Pettersen's sac bunt but throws it away to score Wilson and put runners on 2nd and 3rd, sac fly from Coffey, passed ball by Iowa, single from Hanson to score Pettersen, fly out by Stemper, Hanson steals 2nd, and Smith strikes out to end the inning 8-3 Gophers.

Few scoreless half innings in a row 8-3 Gophers headed to the 6th.

Iowa going to the bullpen again after a leadoff double from Pettersen.

Coffey single scores Pettersen to take a 9-3 lead going to the bottom of the 6th.

Estrada gets a leadoff single and steals 2nd with 2 outs but is left stranded. Meyer back out to the mound for the bottom of the 7th with the 9-3 lead.

Jackson Rose will replace Reggie Meyer who threw 8 excellent innings giving up just 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 7.

A strikeout, a walk, a flyout, a walk, and a strike out finish things off. The strike zone tightened up considerably in the bottom of the 9th. Gophers win 9-3 and will face Iowa again today for a spot in the championship game. Game is scheduled to start around 4 really not sure who will start on the mound for the Gophers maybe Brett Schulze who only threw around 30 pitches in his start against Northwestern yesterday.

If both the Gophers and Northwestern win their next games, will the Gophers have to beat Northwestern twice tomorrow?

Pretty sure it's a one game take all. That's how the bracket has it.

But the benefit of Maryland winning this first one, would be that either team would have played 2 today - just like the Gophers.

I would think that in baseball everyone is running out of pitchers. Is that correct?

Of the 4 left Maryland probably has the most pitching depth. This is a situation where the Gophers really miss their midweek starter Nolan Burchill who was injured about 3-4 weeks ago. My guess would be Gophers go with Brett Schulze who has been their #2 starter all year but really struggled with control yesterday and last weekend as well. He only threw 30 or so pitches before being replaced yesterday. It sounds like Iowa will go with a guy who had been in their weekend rotation but was replaced towards the end of April and has only made 2 appearances in May both in midweek games against Omaha and Western Illinois and gave up like 4 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings.
