2015 Starting O-Line

I can't think if any time he has even played as a gopher in fact I was surprised he still had eligibility. I would be surprised if he is even on the two deeps.

I guess people are thinking that his recruiting status is still enough that someone saw something pretty good in him to rate him higher than any of the OL we have on the squad. granted that was a few years ago and everyone knows what stars actually mean especially if tOSU is looking at a recruit.

but to write him off might be a little dangerous too. Kill brought him in and gave him a scholarship for a reason and he has overcame some health issues that most kids don't have too.

either way the OL should be better this year than last with bigger and more athletic guys fighting for PT

We can drop all the names we want. The key for the OL is depth. Each and every non-starter is one injury away from being a starter. War is hell in them there trenches.

This staff has liked him at guard for a while now and he has always played guard since he got here. Thats not news plus they consider Tyler Moore to be the center of the future probably after Christensen and Bobek are gone.

Limegrover said in his signing day chat that Mayes will get work at center this spring along with Christenson, Bobek, and Moore.

That is interesting. I'm not going to count anyone out, but I think it'll be hard for Bush to hold off Isaac Hayes and Christenson.
The coaches blew Mayes' redshirt rather than give Hayes limited playing time due to "lack of options". They don't seem to be particularly high on him.

I hate the idea of blowing a redshirt under the possibility that a kid may be a backup the next year.

I could be wrong, but I think Hayes played quite a bit in the games Mayes played. I also think he played a bit more than Bush when Bush returned from injury.

It's really hard to predict what we will get from Bobek or Christenson. Christenson really struggled last year returning from injury and we haven't really seen anything from Bobek. Additionally, I think it's almost certain that one of our OL recruits will play next season. We really could use some balance amongst the classes with the OL. Right now, we have Weyler and Rasmussen that are RS FR and I think we would probably like to add 1 or 2 more OL to that group. Just from hearing the coaches speak, it seems pretty obvious they expect Moore to have a really good chance of playing right away.

I also wouldn't be shocked to see Oseland play. He'd have to beat out some older players but he certainly seems big and strong enough and Rasmussen nor A. Mayes have seemed to secure spots.

They didn't. They all expect him to start this year. IMO.

I just don't think anyone keeps C Mayes off the field barring injury...the coaches burned his redshirt for a reason...I expect him to start at guard. Kid has great feet and can really get leverage and pull for his size...

Yep...and won a Big 10 Freshman of the Year Award as well I believe.

It's really hard to predict what we will get from Bobek or Christenson. Christenson really struggled last year returning from injury and we haven't really seen anything from Bobek.

The coaches obviously love Jon Christenson and feel confident in what he brings. Barring residual effects of his injury, it is highly likely he will be starting at one of the interior OL positions. I'm not sure the coaches even know what Bobek is capable of, as last year was his 1st season at Minnesota working in the Minnesota offense and he was injured the second half of the season with a MCL tear. And obviously, they are enthusiastic about the new OL recruits. Bob L makes a good point about judging players that we haven't seen. Let's see what the coaches are saying about any of these positions as spring progresses. I would also point out that no one was even considering David Cobb as a prospective starter two springs ago. He was 4th string until Kirkwood and R Williams went down in Sept 2013, Gillium(name?) didn't perform, and Cobb got his chance to show how good he is. If Kirkwood and Williams don't get hurt, Cobb may have never gotten that chance.

I'll be surprised if bjorklund plays full time. People who know him told me going into last year he has some oto oseniks style knee problems that won't really go away.

Didn't Kill on sports huddle say that Christenson will be getting a rod taken out of his knee soon and will be a new man or something like that? I think he sounded excited.

Yep! This point seemed to have been lost here and has not been part of the discussion. As usual, Bob_Loblaw summed it up best with the following:

They didn't take the redshirt off Mayes to have him as a back-up in 2015: they took it off because they think he can start. Just look at the staff's history since they've been here, practically every true freshman that sees the field is starting as a sophomore.

They also aren't going to redshirt 5 O-lineman. They will identify the best one in fall camp who they think can start in 2016, and that player will get some time this year.

they took the red shirt off knowing that an OL can get injured easily and that if there was a said injury he would be able to recover with a medical red shirt.

not to brag but i was a big Cobb guy before when he was a 4th stringer and wondered why he wasnt getting a shot. I figured it was a practice thing and that he was in the dog house

I'm not even sure what this means? Are you trying to say that they played Connor thinking he might get injured and they could recoup the year by giving him a medical redshirt?

Blown? Hilarious.

They took his redshirt because they knew he would start in 2015. Just opens up another schollie for another monster OL after 2017.

I would think Maye's job to lose. Jon C looks like he will play guard and back up center

Looks like? How do u come to that conclusion- u have inside info?

The only thing I'm sure of is that the best 5 will play. From what I've seen I'd like to see a line of Lauer, Campion, Christensen, Bush/Bjorkland/Mayes, Pirsig. Our interior line is a jumble right now. Bush is ok but hasn't stood out. Hayes seemed like a lock to be a solid OL when recruited but has barely played. Bjorkland has looked ok in his stints, and Mayes seems to have talent but see Hayes' career. That's not even bringing in Alex Mayes yet

Damn that had to be painful. I can't imagine, and hope I never have to know what that feels like in your leg.

yeah they could recoup the year through a medical redshirt however they could do that as well if he had been redshirted and then got injured later as well.

i am not sure why they burned his redshirt season for as much as he played. I do think it was a waste of a year for him. he would have been better off waiting and sitting out and playing his 5th year senior season. I think Tommy the Tank could have used one more season to really showcase his talents. I think all OL should be redshirted as they woudl all be better as 5th year guys than 4th year guys no matter where they are at physically/mentally

Medical redshirts are given only if the injury happened during the first four games of the season.

My guess is they thought he was ready to take over the RG spot but he struggled a little more than they thought and/or other guys played better than they thought. I could be way off, just guessing.

Another thought is they feel that they will be getting these type of OL going forward so if the guy can help a little now, the loss of a year of eligibility at the end of his career isn't a big deal as they will have another good recruit to take his place. With our offense style, recruiting good OL should be easier than some other positions like WR.

Totally agree.
