Iowa St @ Iowa

Isn't it a given that Iowa St will play at Iowa in the CyHawk game, errr whatever they call it?

Yep. Just getting started on this, so it might be awhile before I update it. I'll add that one.

I would love to see the Big Ten expand the conference schedule. Not playing Michigan or Michigan State at home is annoying, and it will be even more annoying when we losing out on a Wisconsin or Iowa home game.

Playing so few teams twice is getting me more annoyed about the expanded conference and more unbalanced schedule. We need more conference games. This thing has the possibility of really skewing the regular season championship. I can't wait until some middling team wins the title because they only played the bottom rung teams. The outrage will be something to behold. Better yet will be some B1G team winning twelve conference games by beating up on the bottom five, finishing in third place and getting "snubbed" by the NCAA. Yuk.

See Georgia, 2013-14 version, SEC 3rd place, 12-6 conference record, NIT bid, and the Bulldogs were nowhere near the NCAA bubble.

With the unbalanced conference schedules, coaches have to be more cognizant how they schedule out of conference. If they think they have a really tough conference schedule, might want to ease off a bit in November and December. If their conference schedule looks like it might be a little on the soft side, to be safe they'd be wise to make sure there's an extra opportunity or two to get quality wins in November-December. I think the latter applies to the Gophers next season.

Hoosiers to host SMU next season, added above.

Oh well, down the drain goes my hopes of a home-and-home with the Mustangs.

Gophs should go to Indiana, kidnap the Hossiers and send them to TX TECH, and play SMU in Assembly Hall. That would surprise a lot of people and probably "Raise the Roof" instead of having it fall in!!!

Any possibility we could get richmondinsider and his henchmen to perform this never before heard of scandal?

Why would you hope we would set up a home and home with them after we played them in the NIT. Seems like that match up would hurt our chances since we just played them.

Also, I wouldn't expect a big home and home announcement this year. Pitino isn't going to want to add another tough opponent after booking Louisville and the NIT preseason tourney. Maybe next season.

Because they're very similar to us (have a lot coming back, programs on the rise?), and it would be an intriguing out-of-conference matchup for 2 years. But yes, it doesn't have to be SMU, there a lot of teams out there just like them. Hopefully we'll find 1 interested in a home-and-home.

Totally disagree, Madman. I think it would be awesome. Kind of like a FB home and home vs TCU.

I'm not expecting one either. That ship sailed a long time ago. I criticized Monson quite a bit toward the end, but I'd kill for a couple of the nonconference HOME schedules he put together (excludes ACC Challenge games):

2001-02: Oregon, Nebraska
2002-03: Georgia, Texas Tech
2005-06: UNLV, UAB
2006-07: Iowa State, Arizona State

I like recognizable names, and they don't necessarily have to be opponents who are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Excluding ACC Challenge games, since Monson was fired the Gophers have played exactly one nonconference home game vs. a major-conference opponent (USC in 2011-12). That's an embarrassing number for a Big Ten institution. Will Pitino change that? We'll start to find out this summer and the ones that follow.

Not onlythat, SS? It would feature a Senior member of the Coaching Fraternity vs a Junior Member of the Coaching Fraternity.

I wonder if Donovan would do a home and home with us. I don't get the vibe that he is helping Richard in the same way as Rick, so maybe there isn't as much downside to a home and home.

Otherwise doing one with an east coast team (SJU maybe?) would be good for recruiting.

In that case we should check with DLS!

Seems like the trade off since Monson was fired has been that the Gophers are always in a major pre season tournament. I don't remember that consistency before. So the overall SOS is probably the same or better post Monson... just the home slate is weaker. Its tough, as I don't want to stop playing those tournaments. Hopefully once Pitino gets his footing, he will allow for 1 marquee home game in addition to the pre season events..

A very good point, Rouser, though I would point out the Gophers were playing in major preseason tournaments before Tubby got here. ... the Preseason NIT in 2003-04, the Great Alaska Shootout in 2004-05 (it was still a top-flight tournament at that point), and the Old Spice Classic in 2006-07. But as you astutely pointed out, the years the Gophers didn't play in a major preseason tournament mostly coincide with the years Monson scheduled multiple home-and homes.

The more I think of it, we're doomed as far as future home schedules go. I have no reason to believe things will be any different moving forward under Pitino. Bummer for those of us who purchase season tickets.

Still find it embarrassing that we couldn't or pretty much refused to schedule HOME-AND-HOME major-conference opponents the last 7 seasons, especially looking at the HOME-AND-HOME major-conference opponents our direct (Big Ten) peers have managed to play during that same time.

Exempt Tourney

Seems like the trade off since Monson was fired has been that the Gophers are always in a major pre season tournament. I don't remember that consistency before. So the overall SOS is probably the same or better post Monson... just the home slate is weaker. Its tough, as I don't want to stop playing those tournaments. Hopefully once Pitino gets his footing, he will allow for 1 marquee home game in addition to the pre season events..

Prior to 2007, NCAA rules only allowed teams to play in "Exempt Regular Season Tournaments" twice within a 6 year period.

Non-bracketed exempt tournament games added to Michigan (host Bucknell) and Michigan State (host Santa Clara) schedules.
