2013-2014 Big Ten schedules announced at 11 am this morning

They kept the Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin games all on the same schedule as 2011-2012. We play all three at home in 2013, and have to once again go on the road to all three within 4 weeks in 2014....brutal.

Also, apparently Michigan State is our new end of the year rival. We play them the last week of the season in 2012, 2013 and 2014.....

Gophers' schedules those two seasons:

2013

Iowa
@ Michigan
bye
@ Northwestern
Nebraska
@ Indiana
Penn St.
bye
Wisconsin
@ Michigan St.

2014

@ Penn St.
bye
Northwestern
Michigan
bye
@ Nebraska
Indiana
@ Iowa
@ Wisconsin
Michigan St.

Yeah, 2014 is killer. Like that 2013 schedule though. Away games are Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan and MSU, and we get Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin at home.

And the byes are spaced perfectly in 2013.

Nice, we get PSU and Indiana from the other division and miss OSU. That's huge, PSU is not the power they once were and OSU will be for the foreseeable future.

Thoughts:

- No Ohio St. for 4 YEARS IN A ROW. There was only one potential team out of Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Penn St., and Ohio St. that we would not see over the next 4 years. To have that team be Ohio St. is HUGE for us. Is the Big Ten trying to help Minnesota get back on its feet?

- That 2013 schedule sets up very nicely for a championship run. If Kill has it humming by his 3rd year (like he has at every previous stop), that schedule couldn't be much better for us to finally make a New Year's Day bowl. The downside is that we will be breaking in a new starter at QB that season - likely Shortell.

Schedules with NC

With the NC games. Yes, we play SJSU two years in a row at home.

2013
UNLV
at North Carolina
Western Illinois
San Jose State
Iowa
@ Michigan
bye
@ Northwestern
Nebraska
@ Indiana
Penn St.
bye
Wisconsin
@ Michigan St.

2014
Eastern Illinois
at Miami (Ohio)
North Carolina
San Jose State
@ Penn St.
bye
Northwestern
Michigan
bye
@ Nebraska
Indiana
@ Iowa
@ Wisconsin
Michigan St.

Wow! Does the big ten not understand who each teams biggest rivals are? First game of year in Big Ten in 2013 Iowa?
Then in 2014 we have both WI and Iowa back to back on the road. Do they have Michigan playing Michigan State and then Ohio State back to back on the road?
I hope we have an interesting non conference schedule in 2014 because the only home games that will peak any interest is michigan, and maybe Penn State.
I will give them a F-

Who knew MSU would be our end of year rival.:)

I was thinking the same thing, too bad MG wasn't a Sr. that year! Shortell will have 2 years on campus and Nelson will have 1.5 years on campus at that point, if either is as good as a lot of people think they will be I think they will be ready to go (fingers-crossed).

Marcus tweet:

"Is it good or bad that Minnesota won't play Ohio State from 2011-2014? I say Kill probably caught a break. Why tack on one more loss."

Go Gophers!!

Look at the composite schedule before flipping out, would ya?! Week 1 vs Iowa (not on the road as you point out). There are only TWO B1G GAMES that week, us vs Iowa and Becky at osu. That is awesome, IMO. Should get some good tv coverage to show off TCF on a beautiful fall day, you would hope. In 2013-2014. Indiana has three sets of back to back road trips against Ill/PSU, MSU/michigan, and Wis/osu. I know they're not rivalry games like you point out, but its not unprecedented. There's others that play back to back road games as well, but I'm just too lazy to type it out ;) *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# happens, get over it.

The 2014 home schedule isn't that bad. North Carolina, Mich, and MSU I'm excited. Northwestern has been a great match up the past few seasons. Not marquee, but solid match ups.

I'm not sweating the end of the year "rival" thing because it's been clear for a little while that we're unlikely to see Iowa or Wisky in that slot on a yearly basis. Why? Because the B1G seems to have established Iowa/Neb as a big end of season matchup and it is unlikely that they'd put a cross division matchup as the last game every season to prevent CG rematches the following week (less of an issue for us right now of course but I can still see them avoiding it if possible).

Sparty

I realize programs can change in a span of two years (get significantly better or worse), but MSU fans have to like their 2013 and 2014 schedules. They miss Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin from the Leaders Division while getting to play Illinois, Indiana (protected) and Purdue.

Where did I write on the road in 2013 against Iowa? Good you can read now try comprehending what was written?
I am still saying that you will not see Michigan or Ohio State opening up there big ten schedule against each other.

The 2014 home schedule is brutal. Of course it will be coming off of the Rose Bowl in 2013, so ticket sales won't be a problem.

Did you mean road schedule? The home schedule doesn't seem that tough to me. Michigan looks like the only tough home game, and that's only if they return to being "Michigan" over the next couple years.

By his comment on ticket sales I think he means quality of home schedule not toughness.

Ah, good call. "Brutal" as in "yuck". And yes, I agree. The "Tim Brewster Bowl" with UNC is certainly unique, though.

My fault. Your sentence structure and using the word 'in' twice made it seem that you thought we played at Iowa. My bad. I still have a valid point. There is only one other B1G game that weekend, which is great for exposure. I believe we play at PSU for the opener the next year with only one other B1G game as well.

Since you're being a d!ck, PSU is on the road in 2014, there's no thing as a F- (you can't do worse than failing), and there versus their versus they're ;)

That'll teach him.

One change that I would really like to see to the B1G schedules is the home/away scenarios with our two biggest rivals. How hard would it be to make sure that every year we have either Iowa or Wisconsin and home instead of how it currently is with getting them both home or away each year. This would guarantee one major rival home game each year and avoid having to play both of them and Nebraska away every other year. Also helps a lot in balancing the home schedule for ticket sales.

Agreed. I thought it might get altered when this schedule came out, but obviously it didn't.

This is big as there could conceivably be some years where the Gophers will get Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Ohio State all in one season. If Penn State (who is not on the schedule in 2012) stays on for four years, the Gophers will play all six in 2015 & 2016. This is the lousy price the U pays for Michigan and Ohio State wanting to be in separate divisions.

Gopher fans will not be pleased to learn that UW misses both Michigan & Nebraska in 2013-2014.

Maybe a MN-UW title game in December 2013?

I really think Minnesota and Wisconsin should be the last game of the year before the big ten title game. We should be playing our rival at the end of the year. Michigan State is not a rivals to us. only in Hockey really are they.

You are right about Penn State being an away game. This actually helps my argument. Some of us pay for premium seating and on paper the home schedule is not very exciting. We only have one team coming in that is considered a football power-Michigan. If this team posts a 3-9 record in 2013, the Gophers will be playing in front of an empty stadium come 2014.
This is why it is a flunk!

We should be playing our rival at the end of the year.

I totally agree. I'm just not holding out a lot of hope for it since the B1G seems inclined to avoid cross-division scheduling that week to eliminate the chance of a repeat in the following week's CCG.

That's true, but because OSU-Michigan is an end-of-season game and it is a cross-division game, that means that there will always have to be at least one other cross-division game that week, so why not Minnesota-Wisconsin?

I'd love to believe the B1G cares about our rivalry with WI the way they do about The Game but I kind of a cynic in that regard. In an logical world The Game getting played that week would be all the prompting the conference needs to allow it. I fear that they'll play the "The Game is special and had to be protected" card and then mumble something about the MN/WI game not having the same set in stone traditional date (which is sadly true). Here's hoping I end up being very, very wrong sometime soon! :)
