1999 Minnesota Golden Gophers

here what got me thinking. What if we beaten Wisconsin, Ohio State and Purdue. We would have went to the Rose Bowl. So would we had play for the national title or not?

Hard to say. That would have been wins Vs. four ranked teams, same number as Virginia Tech. I think in the end Virginia Tech would have been picked simply for the Vick highlight reel to go against Florida State while the Gophers would be put in the Rose Bowl.

There would be a chance for a split title then, the same way it happened in 2003 with LSU and USC. Speaking of which, if Minnesota won Vs. Michigan and defeated Michigan State, that final game against Iowa that season would have been for an undefeated season.

The craziest part is that the squad was an Ot loss away from a conference title and rose bowl

All they had to do was beat Wisconsin and they would have had a share of the conference title and gone to the Rose Bowl due to the last appearance tie breaker.

...and that heart-breaking OT loss to Wisconsin referenced above only went to OT because Nystrom (who was a great kicker) shanked a chip-shot 27-yard FG at the end of the first half.

I’d take the 03 team. But I think the 99 team had a little more heart. Definitely less talented though

I think if '03 could neutralize T Carter from making every single tackle, they'd win.

I always thought the '05 team was as good as those others; they just had a more daunting schedule -- Penn State (Orange Bowl winner), Ohio State (Fiesta Bowl winner), Wisconsin (Citrus Bowl winner) & Iowa (maybe should have beat Florida in Outback, who the next year won national title) -- & the Mason contract hanging over the program at the end of the year.

These were my freshman and senior year teams. I agree '03 team was better with more explosive offensive playmakers. '19 team was more accomplished but I think 2019 vs 2003 would be a hell of a game.
