Both seasons were largely a disappointment (1998 team eeked one out vs. Arkansas St. and had the wild onside kick win vs. Michigan St.) Mason's 98 team won 5 games, but if you things go bad in the above mentioned games they would have matched this years win total of 3.
Both teams played better as the year progressed. 1998 saw close losses to Michigan and Penn St., and a respectable 26-7 loss at Wisconsin, after being drubbed earlier in the year in Columbus and West Lafayette.
Both teams finished the season by dominating their final game of the year, at home, against coaches in their final season (Zook, presumably) utilizing great games by their mobile Junior QB (Cockerham/Gray).
