I had not seen this version. Nicely done with the available media.

From the author:

"This is The 10/22/1977 Michigan at Minnesota Game. It is a Color Film with Radio Audio. Bob Ufer Calls the game. By this time The Big Ten had the reputation of being The Big 2 and The Little 8. To an extent it was deserved as only Michigan or Ohio State had won the conference for 10 years. This was not to say that neither was ever challenged in their confrontations outside of each other. It made the second year in a row that undefeated and untied Michigan, ranked #1, lost to someone other than Ohio State. In an ironic twist The Gophers became the only team to beat both Rose Bowl Participants in the same season. They had beaten Washington in an early season encounter. I claim no rights to the film or the audio but I did author this combination."

Always a treat to see any video from this game!

And then 3 years later when Michigan made a return trip to Memorial Stadium in 1980 for Homecoming, the theme for the Homecoming Button was "Wish Again, Michigan". I was at the game, and that wish did NOT come true.

After both teams left the field after pre-game warm-ups, Butch Nash was at midfield demonstrating to two of the officials what appeared to be his perception of the Michigan center moving the ball pre-snap in a way that entitled the Gophers to cross the neutral zone and initiate contact. I’ve always wondered if the Minnesota domination of the line of scrimmage on defense was related to the point Butch was making.

I really enjoyed watching that. Did I see right that in the third quarter, Minnesota was at 3rd and 22 after a holding penalty. They lined up in a shotgun formation but direct snapped to a back who then punted the ball. I've seen a lot of football, but I don't recall ever seeing a punt on 3rd down.

Rare, but you used to see it occasionally back 40 or more years ago if a team was really backed up as a surprise, as in this case.

Murray Warmath punted on third down on a regular basis during his early 1960's run. His defense was especially strong and fighting for field position was an important part of his offense.

Warmath did that routinely.

Great work in putting the video and audio together.

At the 2:45 mark, Bobby Weber of the Gophers returned a Michigan punt 10 yards. Years later, Bobby's son, Adam, became a 4-year starting QB for the Gophers and the only 3-time Gopher football captain in its history. Pretty sweet Weber family legacy!

Was a freshman at the U and attended that game winning 16-0. That year the gophers were similar to today's gophers as far as teams they beat and lost too. 3 of their non-conference games were against future b10 teams: UCLA, Washington and Maryland. Who would have guessed b10 would expand to 18 teams.

Gophers punted on 3rd down repeatedly in 61 Rose Bowl against Washington. Was called a quick kick. As a youngster I found the tactic frustrating.
