per Doogie and PMac - a few of the nuggets:

• Marquette coach Buzz Williams: There's been no buzz. But since he's the name du jour, we feel compelled to list him.

• Villanova coach Jay Wright: On the day Smith was fired, a source close to Wright said there was no way he'd come to Minnesota. Attempts to reach that source for an update have failed.

• Syracuse associate coach Mike Hopkins: He knows Ellis through Villa 7. It's not known if the two have talked about the Gophers job.

• Michigan State associate head coach Dwayne Stephens: He, like Hopkins, knows Ellis well through Villa 7. His boss, Tom Izzo, said on Tuesday that Stephens is involved in an unnamed coaching search.

• Rockets assistant coach/former Gophers player J.B. Bickerstaff: Those close to him are convinced he'd take the job. But there's been no contact as of Monday night.

Go Gophers!!

Fantastic. This list sure is encouraging. JB Bickerstaff? Seriously.

Bickerstaff? probably not because he might want to hire his dad and that is apparently a deal breaker.

are people like you for real? you actually put full stock and personal emotion into every un-sourced media report that gets posted or pure media speculation that gets tossed around? get a grip. do you honestly think doogie "freaking" wolfson and phil mackey have any insider knowledge of the hiring process and who teague/ellis are targeting? they don't. and virtually none, if any, or their media peers do either. please try and understand that this media stuff is purely SPECULATION and guesses.

This is now the 87th thread that states nobody knows much of anything in regards to the coaching search.

My point isn't that I think Bickerstaff is a realistic possibility. I do not think that Pmac and Doogie have great information on this. My point is that we've clearly run out of good realistic possibilities, and so we're in the realm of the unknowns. And I'm not happy that we got rid of a known commodity, Tubby, who whatever his faults, has a history of success, to plunge into the completely unknown. If that gives you joy, so be it.

Bickerstaff? People convinced he'd take the job? Yeah, he would obviously take the job.

Hopkins? I'd like him, but he's essentially the coach in waiting in Syracuse. If that's not true or if he is impatient, he'd be #1 on my list as far as assistants go. He is a fantastic coach.

Williams and Wright? Pipe dreams

Stephens? Yep, we've been talking about him for a few days now.

Doogie and PMac are really killing it again. I love that Doogie is talking about not being able to reach that source. Maybe he should see if Fred Hoiberg's agent knows Jay Wright.

Go Gophers!!

Anthony Grant was still his "guess" as the person for the position...now he forgets to mention him?

The local media does not like being locked out of any easy to access information.

If they want to lock people out, that's their choice and it's okay. The consequence is that there will be speculation and leaks that you don't like. Chilly tried the secret squirrel route in this town and it didn't serve him well.

Norwood is starting to remind me of Chilly. Chilly was not nearly as bad of a football coach as his unpopularity in MN suggests. But once you've made the impression, it's hard to get rid of. It'll be easier for Norwood because an AD can stay somewhat out of the public eye if his coaches succeed, but it's still problematic.

I think it is you that is investing personal emotion into the article. You get riled up and post on any gopher news story out there that isn't positive.

There are no interesting candidates left....they either signed extensions or rejected the U....let's be honest - this is not the way Teague thought this would all play out after firing Tubby....we are screwed!

It is not reassuring that no one knows that is going on with the coaching search when it is now apparent that Teague and Ellis are included on that list. The likelihood that we will pay $2.5M to go from mediocre to square one is real.

Not sure how anyone can feel alright about this? Kaler is playing the politician right now and saying what he needs to, but this is a mess plain and simple. Zero chance Norwood isn't really disappointed with the lack of progress. If he isn't disappointed we should be even more worried about this.
