12 bowl game losses so from teams that ended up not too far ahead of #36 Gophs in AP poll.

#33 Illini lost to #24 Miss State
#31 Purdue lost to #16 LSU
#32 South Alabama lost to WKU
#29 Ole Miss lost to TxTech
#28 Cinci lost to Louisville
#27 UCF lost to Duke
#26 UNC lost to #16 Ducks
#25 NCSU lost to Maryland
#22 UTSA lost to #23 Troy
#21 Texas lost to #12 Washington
#20 South Carolina lost to #19 ND
#18 UCLA lost to #35 Pitt

There is no love for the west.
Illinois and Purdue both could also finish with 9 wins and unranked.

It’s not just the gophers. Somehow Notre Dame ranked with losses to Marshall and Stanford. They had the quality win against Clemson but their third best win is maybe Syracuse.
The rankings are interesting.
Texas is going to finish with the same record as Texas tech and a head to head loss but will be ranked higher because they lost close to Alabama in week 2

More common than you might think. Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Purdue all finished 9-4 in 2021 and none were ranked in the final AP ranking. In 2016, both Minnesota and Nebraska finished 9-4 and weren't ranked. Nebraska also finished 9-4 in both 2013 & 2014 without being ranked.

I agree that we won't be ranked in the final AP poll.
 

I'd like to see a Top 25 finish. It may not happen with the biases in the final rankings.

Is that the bias against teams who didn't beat a good team? The good news is we now have wins against two teams with a winning record thanks to the bowls.

As Fleck says, games come down to a few plays - too bad his play calling cost us two games this year and what would have been a chance to get our asses kicked by Michigan.

This was a transition year, saved by Mohamed Ibrahim. Finishing 9-4 had more to do with an extremely weak NC schedule, than a team that should be ranked.
 

Great defense doesn’t get noticed as much as offense. The B1G West has multiple teams with very good defense and this year maybe stronger than usual with Illinois and Purdue being improved. Michigan is clearly in a different league, but their lowest point games came against Illinois and Iowa. We like to think the West has offensive ineptitude , but teams have to survive a gauntlet of good to great defenses.

honestly don't think Michigan blows us out if Mo is healthy. Probably a low possession, grind it out kind of game. They probably pull away late and win by two scores, but don't think it wouldve been a beatdown. Sad we didn't execute to try and get the opportunity as it was there for the taking this year

It isn’t biased against teams who didn’t beat good teams. It is biased against teams who didn’t beat “good” teams. For instance Mississippi state is 8-4 and ranked because they beat a great ole miss team that was top 12 15 days before they played them as well as a win against #17 Texas A&M…
Their losses aren’t to any mediocre teams either, just to number 22 Kentucky


Although Ole Miss is now 8-5
Texas A&M is now 5-7
Kentucky is now 7-5



At the end of the day it is probably better to have good wins and bad losses than no good wins and no bad losses.
If Minnesota had beaten penn state but lost to Michigan state they’d probably be in the top 25 right now.

Actually, I think three wins vs teams with winning records. NMSU, Wisconsin and Syracuse.

That didn't work for the Gophs after the MSU win. MSU was highly ranked a week before the game and still ranked in the Coaches poll when the Gophs beat them. MN has no wins against teams currently ranked, though, so it is what it is.

I thought the only way the Gophers get ranked is a combination of a clean convincing win against Syracuse and a bunch of bowl teams in front of them losing. Yesterday's win was probably too ugly for the pollsters. So far, the computer rankings like it. Massey moved the Gophs up 3 spots to #18.
 

This is why having Syracuse as an opponent sucked. They lost 5 of their last 6 before facing us. Beating them really did not move the needle and give us a great chance of being in the Top 25. Beating a ranked opponent in the Pinstripe would have given us a much better chance.

South Alabama should fall back, Ole Miss might, Cinci might, UCF might, UTSA might.

Both NC schools overrated. 8-5 Texas? 8-5 South Carolina?

Gophs at 30 seems about what will happen.

In the AP and Coaches polls, if every team that lost #19 to #25 drops out, and every winning team with votes jumped those that lost, then Minnesota would get #25. I don't see it happening that way, but Minnesota will be close to being ranked top #25 in those two polls. The question is which of the losers stay inside the top 25.

I'm betting S. Carolina for sure, and maybe Texas stay inside the top 25 which would push out Minnesota. That is unless Minnesota jumps Air Force, Boise or Fresno which is possible.

Out of the teams that won in front of Minnesota, Pitt had a better bowl win (UCLA). Fresno's win was a push (Washington State). Air Force (Baylor- weird how they sucked this year) and Boise (N. Texas) were inferior.

Ohio finishes 10-4....someone will vote for them...USAF will get more votes with the 10th win.
