MINNEAPOLIS – Pride on Ice.

Three words have defined Gopher Hockey since the program's first varsity season in 1921-22 and those words will continue to do so as the University of Minnesota men's hockey program celebrates its 100th season in 2020-2021.

On Wednesday, the Maroon & Gold unveiled plans for honoring the first century of Gopher Hockey with notable initiatives for fans, alumni and all who have helped build the University of Minnesota into one of college hockey's greatest programs.

100 Communities in 100 Days
In anticipation of the 100th season of Pride on Ice, Gopher Hockey will kick off the "100 Communities in 100 Days" countdown campaign on June 25 as Minnesota recognizes 100 communities that helped shape the Maroon & Gold over its first century of competition. Follow the Gophers on Instagram every day between June 25 and October 3 to see the full countdown while other features highlighting communities throughout the 100 days will appear on Twitter and Facebook.

Celebrating Our Legacy
As Minnesota competes in its 100th season during 2020-21, the program will salute the previous ten decades of the historic program along with its five national championship teams and four Hobey Baker winners. Throughout the centennial season, Minnesota will select and honor 100 of the best players and coaches in Pride on Ice history.

Selected by fan voting, the list of All-Century Gopher Hockey Greats will be released throughout the season. Fans are encouraged to fill the ice and select who they would choose to be a part of their ideal starting lineups, as well as one coach.

100th Season Throwback Look
The 100th season of Gopher Hockey will see the Maroon & Gold sport commemorative throwback uniforms for select games during the 2020-21 campaign. Aimed at replicating the design of 1960s Gopher Hockey – an era led by the likes of Minnesota legends Doug Woog and Lou Nanne – the throwback look will be unveiled closer to the start of the season.

Furthermore, all jerseys for the 2020-21 campaign will feature the Gopher Hockey 100th season logo while additional signage to highlight the centennial season will be featured prominently throughout 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Additional Initiatives
Minnesota will implement a variety of community service and engagement initiatives for the 100th season in addition to the "100 Communities in 100 Days" countdown. Goldy's Kids Club members will have the opportunity to sign up to be a pen pal with a Gopher Hockey student-athlete once memberships launch later this summer. In addition, the popular Rink Roots program will return in 2020-21 with Minnesota players and staff dropping in for surprise visits to youth practices throughout the Twin Cities. Submit a request here for a chance for your team to be selected for a Rink Roots drop in.

More promotions, themes, and celebrations for the 100th season of Gopher Hockey will be announced near the start of the season. Visit the 100 Seasons landing page for more information.

The STrib's Randy Johnson:

The route back to Dinkytown as a coach took Motzko to stops like Mason City, Iowa, in the USHL, and he’d travel north to pick the brain of Doug Woog after Gophers practices. Eventually, Lucia hired him away from Sioux Falls of the USHL, and they teamed to help bring back-to-back NCAA championships to campus in 2002 and ’03. Those, of course, will be part of the 100th season celebration, but Motzko takes it back to a behind-the-scenes moment.

“I remember once Don and I were down below [at 3M Arena at Mariucci] and we had to go up to the concourse. There was nobody in the building and we’re jogging up the steps to get to the top, and he stopped and grabbed my arm. He goes, ‘Can you believe a kid from Grand Rapids and a kid from Austin work here?’ ’
