10 Most Interesting Black Candidates to Replace Pitino!

Sam Mitchell would be some kind of "get". Sadly he is not walking through that door. Andre Hollins is on the staff right now. He could have a Pat Summit type career.
Sam Mithcell would take the job, but I don't think he would be considered. He stated last week on Barreiro that he would coach and said he would be interested in NBA or College. I think he would be a good coach here.

Such a confusing thread....Do we start a thread for top 10 asian and hispanic candidates?
Perhaps we could start an all are welcome list as well...you know, for those who have ZERO qualifications for the position, yet they should [must] be included too. Inclusivity is for everyone, right?!

If there is going to be a list of this nature, Stan Johnson from Loyola Marymont should be on it.

He seems to be a PJ of the hardwood type of guy. In the few games I have watched, he seems to make good adjustments in game and his players seem very motivated.

I mean he played 1 season and coached 1 season at Bemidji State. Drake and Marquette as well. He may grow into a really good coach.

Gates is interesting but a bit of a gamble given his short record of head coaching experience.

On the other hand:

1) He was a consensus top 100 recruit as a player;
2) Played at UC Berkley (not a great player but a consistent rotational player who showed continuous improvement);
3) He was a two-time academic All American;
4) Received the award for the top student athlete at Cal;
5) Voted team's most inspirational player at Cal;
6) Picked up his bachelor's degree in 3 years at Cal and went on to earn two master's degrees while being a GA;
7) Spent 14 years as an assistant at Cal, Northern Illinois, Nevada, and Florida State with 7 seasons at the last school;
8) Currently in his second year as head coach at Cleveland State with a big turnaround from his first year.

In short, he's paid his dues and earned everything he's gotten (a sharp contrast to Pitino).

Why not considered? He is good with media, played and coached here.

I’m pretty sure some of that is located in several of the already existing next coach threads.

I believe Gates ends up a top 3 candidate for this job.

Agreed, I think a top 3 would look something like Gates, Muss and Craig Smith in no particular order. I'd be pretty excited about any of those three.

Awesome post, thank you.

Pretty good list of coaches here, and I know a lot of people are in favor of him, but I just have a real hard time getting on board the Anthony Grant train. He was given 6 years at Alabama and didn't do a whole lot with that opportunity, making one NCAA tournament in which his team was promptly bounced in the opening round, and going 117-85 (.579) overall and 54-48 (.529) in conference prior to getting fired, all of which screams highly mediocre and nearly Gopheresque (minus Pitino, who's been even worse).

I don't know. I just think and hope we can do a whole lot better than that.

I'm with you there! The best coach since Jim Dutcher has been Clem Haskins.
Well, it would seem that a pretty good coach wants to be here (though not black)... and it's another Dutcher. Brian Dutcher has a 6.925 million dollar buyout with SDSU, but it's only 1 million if he goes to Minnesota. Dutcher clearly wants the job.

EDIT: Since this is a "black coaches" thread, I'm kind of shocked that nobody has tossed Trent Tucker's name into the mix. Seems like, in the past, his name would always come up in the conversation... but not this time.
