That's awesome and not surprising. I am sure there groups of boosters in some parts of the country thinking they can pick and choose who they want on the team with their slush funds...
 

The sugar daddy making personnel decisions is very much a problem.

Imagine programs where boosters are notorious for running the show ...

The premise here is that the guy funding the NIL likes a kid and offers the kid a bag of money.

The coach ... doesn't want to offer the kid, but now the kid wants to go there.

If the kid is a highly rated recruit now that there might be a lot of pressure on him to take the kids, but maybe he doesn't want him for any number of reasons.

Meanwhile maybe coach wants some other kid who gets offered 0 NIL....

It creates a weird dynamic.

Weird dynamic for sure. I imagine the HC gets the tie-breaker in this case.

At least we won't have to worry about that happening with the Gophers.

FBS FB teams agree to self-regulate...........yah, sure.

the NCAA grows a pair and passes new regulations.........yah, sure.

Congress passes federal legislation............(chances are slim and none, because some of the people handing out the NIL money probably also hand out campaign contributions....)

somebody cue up Soul Asylum......

This is real ugly. It puts pressure on a coach to accept a player that they may not want to have on their team.

Imaging the fanbase jumping all over the coach if some booster buys a 4-5* player from a blue chip school. The coach knows he is very talented, but would be a cancer to the team and the program. Everyone know the player wants to come to your school, but the coach doesn't accept him. the fanbase would chase the coach out of town!!! The coach can't be truthful about why he doesn't want the player, etc...

Depends what you mean, but (U of) Tennessee isn't paying that kid a single dime. That's all 3rd party money.

That's the best part of all this, for the schools. From their (books) point of view, not a single thing has changed. They just give kids scholarships, and whatever happens off the field between private 3rd parties is none of their business so long as it doesn't violate NCAA rules.
 

Where this will all get really interesting is if some team manages to use NIL to openly buy their way to a title. I mean right now we get reports of the big deals and all that but we have not yet seen how this is all going to shake out on the field.

Can enough teams buy enough players to break the stranglehold the handful of elites have on college football right now. Texas A&M and Texas are two that are clearly trying to buy their way to the top. Not that either program has been bad but neither has been among the best of the best for the past 10+ years (outside of 2020 A&M). Tennessee is another tying to buy their way into that group.
 


Who’d a thunk? Nebraska and Texas on similarly bad trajectories.

you really think it isn't going to impact on the field stuff? Imagine the hotshot incoming QB has an NIL deal related to playing time. But the player stinks and get benched. The backup QB has no NIL money, but goes in and lights it up. They decide to go with the backup QB the rest of the year, so the big shot loses out on his NIL money. You don't think that is going to cause problems in the locker room?

Of course it will. I agree with you 100%.

This is entirely a separate issue from what I was talking about. All I was saying is, the school itself only gives scholarships to kids. All the NIL stuff is funded 3rd party, by boosters and businesses.

I don't claim to understand all of this, but from what I've read, I don't think you can tie an NIL deal to on-field performance, because - in theory - the NIL deals are supposed to be separate from the school and the team.

most of the NIL deals I'm reading about are more blanket type of payments. the player or players receive a specific sum for the use of their name, image or likeness.

that is why colleges are starting to call for more regulation on NIL or at least added oversight and compliance. the schools can see what a mess this is turning into.

That transaction represents one that is against the rules. The shitty hot shot would have to still get his money.
 

It is pretty laughable there are still some people referring to this as “college football”.
