2023 MN High School Football season

Hockey went to two classes in the early 90s when the state legislature passed a law mandating it. After a dismal two-year experiment with "tiers" based on that season's won-loss record - which led to things like Rosemount playing in the "small school" class - they went to two classes based on...

    Tim Brewster

In retrospect Brewster never should have been hired and it's kind of amazing that Maturi, after screwing up so badly, was still around to pick his replacement, and Brewster's tenure certainly provided its share of unintentional comedy . . . but a part of me has a certain amount of sympathy for...

All Things Emmanuel Karmo (Robbinsdale Cooper HS) Recruitment Thread

Mike Sunvold almost 40 years ago at Cooper was recruited nationally back when that didn't happen often; he had a decent Gopher career and was drafted by Tampa but never played in the NFL.

All Things Emmanuel Karmo (Robbinsdale Cooper HS) Recruitment Thread

Why would that be weird? Exceptionally gifted athletes can come from anywhere (as in Koi Perich from Esko), and Willie Howard, who was an elite player himself before blowing out his knee, presumably knows something about running a program and developing kids.

    Non Revenue Generating Sports

Men's hockey at the U was routinely profitable, to the tune of between $1 and $2 million a year, until the downturn in revenues that started around 7-8 years ago, and that was caused by declining fortunes on the ice, the effects of the conference shakeup and how it alienated fans, and absolutely...

    Non Revenue Generating Sports

As long as football and its 85 scholarships remain linked to the school (in this day and age who knows what the future holds for CFB) no women’s sport is going anywhere, for Title IX reasons.

Official 2024 Gophers Football Recruiting Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Rumors

It's not that I necessarily think the Gophers should have offered Hart; it just surprises me, given how dominant he's been in high school, that he hasn't attracted more attention or offers. I have never met him and have no direct connection to him or St. Thomas, but I do have high-school aged...

Given that he has offers from Georgetown and St Thomas it certainly wouldn’t seem like that’s the issue. Hart may not be quite as tall as listed but he certainly is not 5’7”. I have never seen a HS runner in Minnesota move better laterally, or break more tackles.

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS BOWLING GREEN QUICK LANE BOWL IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Coleman Bryson really has an odd niche in that he sees the field more in bowl games than at any other time.

Official 2024 Gophers Football Recruiting Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Rumors

I realize that as football has evolved "traditional" running backs are not as valued as they once were in the schemes teams play nowadays, so this may be part of it . . . but that Savion Hart is not signing somewhere today is something I just cannot figure out.

    De-Commit from De-Commit

Linguistic accuracy aside, in today's climate the potential for misunderstanding or mispronunciation, and the resulting consequences, might well counsel against using the word you suggest.

That Savion Hart does not have more college options so far just bewilders me. The guy moves laterally like a video game character.

You can't blame the kid for trying to score in the moment . . .but if the Chan player goes down on the 5 on the long TD instead of scoring they can probably run out the clock.

2023 MN High School Football season

Generally you cannot move down in class, and you cannot be forced to move up; only moves allowed are voluntarily moving up. There is a limited avenue for appeal seeking to move down if your free/reduced lunch percentage is over 50%, or you're within 10% of the class size cutoff; my sense after...

2023 MN High School Football season

Yeah, as someone who went to Hopkins very, very long ago I can't believe I'm saying this . . . but I'm okay with Edina winning. Where a sport has been dominated by a few teams I always like to see a party crasher, and football isn't a sport where they have such a built-in advantage due to...

2023 MN High School Football season

I am a bit surprised that Mahtomedi played Chanhassen that close today, after Mahtomedi's regular season. St. Thomas is vulnerable defensively so I don't think they can win it all but they will move the ball and score against anyone. I have yet to figure out how Savion Hart doesn't get more...

The widespread use of artificial turf fields, which always have hash marks at every yard line, helps this. In smaller areas with grass fields you might not always see those marks.

Gopher historians ? What is OUR largest comeback victory ?

Probably Sean Lumpkin. I have been in few, if any, stadiums with a more depressing atmosphere than the Metrodome after that game.

I'm sure something like that was going on, but even considering that it seemed a bit extreme. But it actually works out in this instance because it makes it likelier Two Rivers will play St. Thomas Academy, which everybody in that neck of the woods wants to see (earlier Two Rivers loss to...
