B1G soliciting preliminary bids from private equity firms

I don't see this ending well at all. Once open, that's a door the university presidents will never be able to close.

PJ was hired 8 years ago today. What grade would you give the Fleck era?

He's been the best Gophers football coach in my nearly 40 years of fandom. He's brought dependability and a youthful energy to the program, producing a single huge season in 2019 (which could've been massively historic if he had been more aggressive at Iowa), some painful, inexplicable losses...

How does anyone compete with this NIL power?

There are deep-pocketed donors for NIL collectives, then there’s the second richest person on earth, combined with the exposure and marketing muscle of Barstool. How the hell can we (or anyone else, frankly) hope to compete with that? College sports is so fucked...

An alternative to the Jug that we can own

In my lifetime we are 4-43 in the 47 games we’ve played for the Jug. With that level of futility, I’m proposing that even if we lose against Michigan we walk away with a trophy that represents the near hopelessness of the “rivalry”: The Beige Consolation Carafe.

Evanston approves Northwestern's new $800M stadium

Work begins immediately, with the new place expected to be ready for the 2026 season. So our last game in the crappy old Ryan Field will be an all-time horrible loss. I probably should head over there with a local priest to perform an exorcism before they begin construction.

Iowa's McNamara likely out for season with leg injury suffered on Saturday

This won't do anything to help their push for 25 a game. Now we really have no excuse for not beating them this year. https://x.com/DavidEickholt/status/1708905662078447955?s=20

Pat Forde: Fleck's passing game left town with Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman, and it hasn't come back

Coach Who Should Drive the Bus to Work P.J. Fleck (39), Minnesota. Here’s what Fleck did in the fourth quarter at North Carolina on Saturday while trailing the Tar Heels by 11 points: punted from the North Carolina 43 on fourth-and-9, then punted from the Minnesota 40 on fourth-and-3. At some...

Gophers in the Big Ten this century (Spoiler Alert: It's not pretty)

I wanted to pull numbers to understand just how bad this program has been since the turn of the century, so I totaled conference records for every school from 2000-23, and included the number of seasons they finished above .500 and their number of Top 4 finishes. The results for each school are...

    Gophers conference road record 2019-23

Just brutal. 2022-23: 1-8 (Johnson) 2021-22: 1-9 (Johnson) 2020-21: 0-10 (Pitino) 2019-20: 2-8 (Pitino) We're 2-17 (.105) on the road in conference over the last 2 years. We're 2-27 (.069) on the road in conference over the last 3 years (including the last year of Pitino) We're 4-35 (.103) on...

Do the Gophers still beat the Badgers today with Tanner playing QB?

I don’t know the answer, but think it’s an interesting hypothetical. The passing game felt more dynamic today with Athan. I’m not sure Tanner makes some of those big armed throws that put us over the top.

Northwestern plans to tear down Ryan Field, build an $800M replacement

The worst stadium in the conference would be knocked down after the 2023 season, with the new one with a smaller capacity ready by 2026. It would be privately funded.

FiveThirtyEight: Where should the Big Ten expand next?

Quite a bit of analysis to look at here (which is very football-driven), but an interesting exercise to break down the contenders from the pretenders for future expansion. I particularly love that when broaching the idea of relegation that Silver has Minnesota in the Upper Division of a proposed...

PAC-12 scraps division winners meeting in football championship game; teams with best win percentage will now advance

I wonder how long it will take for the Big Ten to act similarly. That would do some damage to our hopes of making the conference championship game, I think.
