Gophers target: Morehead State PG Ta'Lon Cooper (5.9 APG)

I expected better things from Thiam based on his Juco stats - 48.5% from 3 on 130 attempts seems to indicate an elite level shooter but in very limited playing time with the Gophers he was far from impressive. Even in warmups, his shooting stroke did not look smooth nor did there appear to be...

Gophers target: Morehead State PG Ta'Lon Cooper (5.9 APG)

Looking at the individual game logs for Thiam, the minutes per game is definitely off. For the first 18 games he is listed as having played only 1 minute per game ( a placeholder to show that he played in that game?) despite putting up some good stats. For the last 6 games, he averaged 21.5...

All Things Gophers Basketball Class of 2022 Recruiting Thread

Anyone else getting worried that we haven't heard anything official from the Gophers about Henley signing his LOI? Today is the first day of the spring signing period and we often hear on the morning of the first day (at least that's usually the case for the early signing period).

    Every Gopher recruit since 2003–ranked

Mutaf finished this past season with Gran Caneria 2 in the Spanish pro league and was the league's leading scorer at 21 points per game, 36% from 3 (at the longer international 3-point line), and 79% from the free throw line. He was recently promoted to the top pro league team but has only...

All Things Gophers Basketball Class of 2022 Recruiting Thread

Payne, Carrington and Ola-Joseph signed in November's early signing period. First spring signing date is April 13 - hopefully Henley will sign then (and a few impact portal transfers as well)

Bilas: College basketballs officiating problem is getting worse; The competition is great and perhaps has never been better. But the officiating sucks

The non-call that bugs me the most is when a physical big man (like Cockburn) is allowed to bull his way to the basket by knocking back his defender several times until he is in layup territory. Why is that repeated physical contact not called a foul? How are you supposed to defend that?

If we could get a player back from last year's roster...

I'm also a Mutaf fan - nice shooting stroke with quick release. He's currently leading his team in scoring at 18 points per game while shooting 37 percent from 3 point range (note that international 3 point line is farther from the basket than NCAA line). I'll never understand why Pitino never...

    Big Ten Schedule?

Anyone know what's holding up the release of the Big 10 schedule? In the last "normal" year (2019-20), the schedule was released on Aug 23.

Maybe so, but at 7"3" he doesn't need to jump that high

With Ihnen's season-ending injury, I wouldn't mind if the Gophers took a flyer on Harold Yu. 247 has him listed as 27th best center in the 2021 class. For context, Holmgren is 1; Thompson is 21; Pohto is 23. Yu is the top rated uncomitted center from that class.

Rivals also lists USC and Vanderbilt as showing interest. I like that he seems to be able to finish at the rim using either hand and shows good shooting form.

Porndog mentioned Harold Yu, a 7'3" center prospect, in post 1055. Here's one of several available videos for Yu:

Looked at Yu's highlight reel and came away somewhat impressed by his shooting stroke, footwork and shot blocking ability. Whether we want to invest 4 years on this guy is another question since he may be viewed as a project (Konate, Gaston) by many. He already looks farther along than Freeman...

    Mid-Majors?

    Yep, guilty as charged

    Mid-Majors?

Agreed. I think most of us can agree that the whole transfer portal situation is a crapshoot. A recent example close to home is our recruitment of transfer athletes form Milwaukee (Horizon League = low major). Akeem Springs was a key addition to the Gophers roster while Brock Stull, who followed...

    Mid-Majors?

Somewhat true but I look at it a little differently - the transfers are aspiring to compete and hopefully succeed at a higher level of competition. IMO it does make a difference where they previously played - it's a more difficult transition to jump from a lower level league where the talent...

    Mid-Majors?

Nailed it! I might add that a mid-major conference typically has one or more teams in the national rankings at some point during the season. Low major conference teams almost never appear in the rankings. Are there exceptions? Of course - Murray State was rated briefly when Ja Morant was...

    Mid-Majors?

I've noticed that several of you have referred to any transfer recruit outside of the P6 conferences as coming from a "Mid-Major" - I would disagree with that categorization. Of our 4 initial transfer recruits only one (Battle - George Washington) came from what I would consider a mid-major...

    Spring Signing Day

Thanks. I think you may be right. I tried to research this issue and saw no requirement for a transfer to sign a LOI. If a transfer athlete's commitment is non-binding, then at what point is he bound to his new school? - end of spring "signing" period on August 1, actual enrollment in school...
