If the wing being defended is off the ball until he receives a pass near the basket, the defender needs verticality, not strength and quickness. But I understand that strength and quickness is preferred if the wing does not properly use his off-the-ball offensive manueverabilty.

I think Betts will be playing only against teams with two big wings because Odukale and Betts are the only two big wings we have that are big enough to defend that situation. Otherwise Betts will wait until next season to play.

In Marcus' column regarding Ben Johnson's pre-Hamline scrimmage comments, Ben specifically listed Kaydn Betts as a PERIMETER player (rather than a post player). I think that is the first time that I have seen him be specific on that subject. I hope Betts can do the job defending big wings.

ONE is my limit....

Starters were Mitchell C, Mitchell PG, Grigsby W, Garcia PF and Betts. I think that means Betts started at Wing. Of course, if Odukale was starting, he would have been a starting wing. But against Bemidji, Betts was a starting wing.

I have a friend who has seen both Betts and me run the 40yd dash, and he says that Betts is definitely faster. Of course I am 80-yrs-old and couldn't finish my 40, but he seems very sure of it.
