Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

I continue to be curious about this, so I looked up what percentage of ADs are black. According to one source that appears to be from the NCAA itself, it’s 13% in D1.

Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

You keep on opening your mouth and removing all doubt, FWIW, there are a couple of Asian coaches that were hired in this cycle (and btw, the aforementioned Mike Bibby has a Filipino mother). I specifically only counted Black coaches (and not the broader category of non-white) because Black is...

Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

I've updated the list with 8 new hires - of the 5 first-timers, 2 are black coaches (added Alcorn St. and Clev. St.). The updated tally is 6 of the 26 first timers are black (23%). There is also one more non-first-timer black coach (at Grambling). Overall, 12 of the 52 new coaches are black...

Yes. His dad is Henry Bibby who was the PG for the 76ers' teams with Dr. J.

Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

I bolded the trust part - I'm willing to buy that ADs believe with every fiber of their being that race plays no factor in their decision. I don't believe there is open and conscious bias. However, the numbers are what the numbers are - qualified Black assistant coaches don't get opportunities...

Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

Here’s where I got the 59% of assistants are Black: Link That article also suggests that Black assistants might be pigeonholed as recruiters for their primary role, and not viewed as X’s and O’s guys.

Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

If you accept that 1) being a P5 assistant is an important qualification for getting a head coach job in D1 and 2) 59% of P5 assistants are Black, then it should follow that somewhere close to that same percentage of first-time head coaches should be Black. It’s math. Race probably does matter.

Analysis of 2025 Coaching Changes - is there a problem?

I decided to make a new thread to avoid being lumped in with the noise in the "Hallman thread". I was interested in what actually happened this year with the new hires. I found a list of 44 D1 men's basketball coaching changes and looked them all up to see if they had been a D1 coach before, and...

    Evans commits to North Carolina

What I've learned is that players named Evans will be locked in at Minnesota and then end up taking the money at Louisville or UNC. Next time there's an Evans, maybe pass...

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Well, the AAC is a better league than the Summit, but yeah, not what he was probably aiming for.

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

I probably said this in this thread somewhere else, but Washington had almost the exact parallel to Minnesota last year (hired a MWC coach with a good reputation and had to build almost an entire team from the portal). They had 4 conference wins.

Maybe a competent coach makes the portal easier, just saying.

I think depth is a not-so-sneaky problem for just about every team in this era. There is a small number of competent players in the portal who are willing to accept a lesser role when there are other teams who need them to play a larger role. Finding players 10-15 in the rotation is getting...

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Regarding international players, I’ve heard they do usually have agents. Probably still cheaper than domestic recruits, but I would not be shocked that they are benefiting financially in some roundabout ways.

    Dawson Garcia returning

Let’s accept the premise that Garcia is getting another year. His value in the portal would be sky high, I assume. It’s quite the coup if he waits too long to enter the portal because the Gophs could pay him zero (or way below market) due to his loss of leverage.

    2025-2026 Revenue Sharing

My understanding is that every school is capped at sharing $20.5m over all their sports. Big East schools don’t have to spend on football. I’m surprised the other P4 conferences aren’t roughly the same, especially for the SEC which undoubtedly spends big on football.

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Why is it hardly shocking? Miami was a terrible, terrible team - 2nd worst of all P5 - and he couldn't crack *that* rotation. For a supposedly "touted" player, that's a big ol' red flag - he wasn't good enough for *that* team. Once MN gets their starters signed and he hasn't found a spot yet by...

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

He only played a total of 43 minutes over 8 games for Miami, with several DNPs, before transferring to Iowa (who had recruited him previously). Miami was really bad, too, so it's a little concerning he couldn't get on the floor. If he weren't from MN...

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Regarding the prediction of last place or missing the BTT, a lot has to shake out, of course. But I did want to comment on the parallel with Washington. They hired a promising MWC coach last year, got one huge portaler to follow him in Osobor (who I'd argue was a better get than any potential...

    2025 Transfer Portal Watch

The quibble I have with this is that even though MN may be less flush with resources than others in the league, I don't think that means you can't compete on the court (and the reverse is true, too - Indiana this year is a great example). Does it make it harder? Yep. But that's why you hire a...

I'm probably in the minority, but Tom Izzo

It worked in the transition from Heathcote…. It’s almost unfathomable to see someone completely separate on the bench at MSU. You’re probably right that the MSU-connected coaches aren’t top choices, but fit is non-trivial. Duke seems to have survived with one of their own who didn’t have an...
