IMO Gopher football has the most loyal and passionate fanbase of all the sports teams here. They just don't have the shear numbers of the Vikings, Twins, & Wild.
This is a pretty bold statement. The fan base of the Gophers is driven largely by alumni while the Wild, Vikings, and Twins are state wide teams with a large casual fan base along with the fanatics. The Vikings and Twins also have fan bases in the Dakotas and Iowa simply because those states...
The biggest problem is the possibility of frozen fields. The only northern NFL stadium that doesn't have a heating system is Buffalo. So most NFL teams can keep their fields in decent shape in freezing temps.

Iowa fans are underestimating the loss of Jack Campbell. Iowa has some great defensive players coming back and they'll likely put out a stingy D but there is no replacing him in the middle of their D and in the locker room.
Since the East/West split PSU has more outright B1G championships than the West division teams combined.
They're 18-8 against the West. Northwestern & Nebraska has split with them. Every other West team has a losing record vs PSU. Wisconsin hasn't beaten PSU in over a decade.

The SEC may not play great Defense but their defenses are also facing the best offensive skill players and QBs. It's not all that difficult to play D in the B1G West. Or in the East when you're not facing Ohio State, Michigan, or PSU.
