All Things 2024 College Football D2 and D3 Thread

SJU had an enrollment of 1462 in 2023. A quarter of that would be 365, and while their roster is big it's not nearly that big. One can quite legitimately argue that an influx of transfers changes Division III football from what it has traditionally been and not in a positive way, but...

    Memorial Stadium

Never had lights - college night games were pretty rare in that era. Those of us who attended games there have very fond nostalgic memories of the stadium, but by modern standards it would seem like an absolute dump were you able to travel back in time and visit it.

There are also Saturday games; this year in the weeks after Labor Day and before MEA compressed the schedule there were at least 4 games every Saturday, and as many as 9. I can reasonably believe that even that degree of reduction in the number of games on Fridays makes a difference in ensuring...

Obviously not a factor at this point of the playoffs with not nearly as many games to cover, but the primary driver of the non-Friday games in the regular season is the referee shortage, as I think we've discussed on here.

So much for Two Rivers . . . Loses 35-31 to Apple Valley. Playing a schedule of completely overmatched teams may not have been all that beneficial.

There are games that offer nothing but embarrassment and potential injury and would be better off not being played . . . but you need to be careful with that philosophy. A few years back my son's team was a #6 seed against a #3 seed that had put them into running time in the fourth quarter just...

To be fair to Hopkins the school isn't nearly as big as Wayzata, Minnetonka, or Eden Prairie, and faces all sorts of demographic and socioeconomic challenges that the schools surrounding it don't have to nearly the same degree. The idea of every team in every sport making the postseason has...

Limiting the number of playoff teams - you could let nonqualifiers play each other for a 9th game - would solve that problem and also increase the number of teams that have the chance to end the season with a win or at least a somewhat positive experience. It's less of a problem in the smaller...

Section 2 in 5A is just insanely deep - Chaska is the #5 seed and they've beaten Mankato East and St. Thomas.

    "Simulating brandishing a weapon" penalty

Were I the ref I might well have overlooked it . . . But a senior leader has to know better than to even give them the chance to call it. You have to think the coaches have mentioned it to them given the emphasis on it this year.

Hard to find common opponents for comparison given Two Rivers’ JV schedule, but they did easily beat Hastings, which beat Jefferson by 15.

***OFFICIAL USC AT MINNESOTA MAROON AND GOLD BATTLE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Perich should not leave the field the rest of the year. May be Gophers’ best defender tonight. Is it because USC takes so many other penalties that they are allowed to hold so often on the OL?

Hopkins games must be quite something to watch - the average combined scoring output this year is just over 74 points. Two Rivers continues to blow out the city schools on their schedule and the seemingly inevitable section final with St Thomas should be an interesting game.

wisconsin RB Chez Mellusi stepping away from team to heal from injuries

Didn't he suffer a compound leg fracture last year? You can understand how there would be bumps on the road back.

Two Rivers is 12-2 since the beginning of last year. A large part of that is the new co-head coach, and their juniors and seniors being by far the two best classes the school has had in a long time; no one can tell just how good they are as this two-year cycle has them playing a district...

The Kennedy thing is sad but inevitable. If you drive through East Bloomington it is quite apparent that this is not an area which economically can complete in today's insanely expensive youth hockey world. Two Rivers-Mpls Southwest postponed to 10:00 Friday morning. Glad I'm not in charge of...

Based on my fairly close observation of one pretty successful metro area HS team over the past decade (and things may well be quite different in other communities), I'd respectfully disagree about the necessity of club baseball. With occasional exceptions for kids who are really gifted...

Yes. At least in theory they would be following the latest ideas in sports medicine on inning limitations and required breaks from throwing, and focusing in October-December on other strengthening exercises. Although one suspects one of their main goals is getting kids to pay as much as they...

Although in today's insane world getting to a JUCO and hopefully moving on to Division I will usually depend on going all in on the club circuit. There is even a "post-grad" team attempting to create the baseball equivalent of the USHL in hockey - kids just lift weights and play baseball for...
