A fun look back: 1986 Top 50 High School Recruits (#30. Willie Burton)

It was great following these lists as they were updated, always enjoyed seeing where the kids were from, etc. The better Sunday newspaper editions of sports sections across country also published these lists. Same for college football, and at least for football, there are still some papers that...

Hey! Look at who is back in the transfer portal and who else just entered it

I considered starting a new thread, but prob no need. I generally like Fran Fraschilla's takes on things. This bit he shared is interesting on state of recruiting. . .

I thought they hired this coach cause he could recruit? So where are the players?

I think your take may apply to head coach, but one or the other is a requirement - - either the head coach must be a solid recruiter, or there better be an assistant who can recruit, nationally. There are teams that will turn around upcoming season despite years of losing, because they have a...

I thought they hired this coach cause he could recruit? So where are the players?

Not sure it's the churn & burn level that you've made it appear with Musselman. Yes Patrick left for OU this year, but he and Porter Moser have a long history. Musselman made two strong hires in Kieth Smart and Gus Argenal, who worked with/for him at Nevada. That said, maybe the first part I...

Gophers guard Both Gach is expected to enter the transfer portal

Have to correct the Bama-related as well. Avery Johnson had an excellent recruiting class in '17, and all three of Jones, Petty and Reese turned out to be key pieces after Johnson's departure, along with Shackleford, who was recruited by Johnson and Oats was able to retain. Credit due for...

PAYTON WILLIS COMMITS TO MINNESOTA, RETURNS BACK

Tried to make sure I didnt repeat something here but a lot of posts on the subject. Here goes. I thought he had a slow/deliberate shot/release previous and in general played a bit that way but if it results in few mistakes all good as it was painful watching the telegraph passes by Gophers as...

Porter Sr. and Porter Jr. then both ended up at Mizzou.

All Things 2020-2021 College Basketball Coach Hire/Fire Thread

At any program across all of college basketball, correct? Or do you have this certainty that those darn Texans are at it again, walking around in their cowboy boots handing out cash. Your point re: boosters has been out there for ~30 years, and isn't a new revelation or theory. My only reason...

All Things 2020-2021 College Basketball Coach Hire/Fire Thread

Not really. Probably more about Beard is a great coach, has a great eye for proper fits/talent and hustles his tail off on recruiting front, as does Drew. Not like either of them landed the Mobley brothers or other head scratchers.

    Gophers roster construction-expectations vs. reality

Interesting article in today's Dallas Morning News sports section re: Baylor and Scott Drew. It notes that while he's expecting to lose a lot of talent this year, Drew has "moved away from elite recruits to experienced transfers who can develop in his system." ESPN stats noted that Baylor is...

When is Ben Johnson announcing his coaching staff?

I realize this post is dated, and not a huge deal, but Molinari was (and at least for the time being still) an assistant at OU as opposed to N. Iowa. With Lon Kruger retiring, who knows if that will be the case moving forward.

Report: Mark Turgeon could be looking for exit from Maryland per 247

Funny thread, trying to keep up. There are nice neighborhoods in most mid and large cities, be it Omaha, or....on the larger side, Minneapolis and St Paul. I have no ties to Wichita other than biz travel. Seems perfectly nice to me, in the same way Little Rock is fine. With the Koch brothers and...

    Assistant Coaches

Today is not a great day as I’m a sucker for a couple Chinese ADR’s. Shouda, woulda, coulda all are in play......

    Assistant Coaches

This. Elite recruiters are evident especially when you look at the cuurent state of the program. How can Nebraska get a top player or two signed? Hoiberg knows he has a closer (if not Hoiberg himself) in Matt A. I do think Ben Johnson is good. Let’s see what he can do as the guy in charge.

    Assistant Coaches

I think the Freddie Gillespie ‘get’ for Baylor was really big, as it was a guy that was completely under the radar as in unnoticeable and easy to root for. When Baylior got him and he delivered in a big way, that really got Scott Drew going. That’s really an early sign of what was to come with...

    Race in the portal

I did see today (football) that OU still hasn't released QB Chandler Morris to allow xfer to TCU, due apparently to this 'within conference' concern. I'm sure they eventually will, but there are definitely still coaches at least in football who will play that card.

What does Coach Johnson do with the transfer portal?

I'm with you all on this, just I'm in the camp we're past it. Now I"m looking forward like everyone else to how he constructs a roster. I'd like some local flavor, but don't care so long as the product is good. That's really all I"m saying. I just am not going to get riled up any more about why...

What does Coach Johnson do with the transfer portal?

I'm sure you're right, and Wahab will have his pick of just about anywhere. I am maybe holding out some hope though, also in response to MplsGopher, who really cares where he gets his players from. Just because he was hired based on familiarity and credibility w MN scene doesn't limit him to...

What does Coach Johnson do with the transfer portal?

Yes just today. I realize he'll be wanted by every Top 15+ program, but I do think Johnson will expand a lot further than many of us think. Worth a try is all I'm saying. . .
