Land Grant Holy Land: Raking the Big Ten Coaches in 2023 (10. PJ Fleck; "it’s up to him to prove he can continue to succeed in the new landscape.")

Fleck above Ryan Day? Sure, a guy who has not won a division title versus a guy who took national champ Georgia to the mat. Part of being a good coach is recruiting and assembling a good team of ass’t coaches. Day has shown that he is willing to bring in quality assistants when his coaches were...

King of the 3 Stars: Can Minnesota keep winning as a Developmental program in Revamped Big Ten?

For all of Fleck’s success, let’s get real here. No division championships. Not much success against the big 3- UM, PSU, OSU. A measure of success would be at least one division championship in the weak west. It is not going to get any easier next year. To be fair the gophers have a big hill to...

Why Fickell chose Wisconsin over other Big10 opportunities

I’m out. Not a Wisconsin fan. Reading comprehension is not a strong point for a lot of people on this board. My point is getting Fickelll was a big swing for Wisc. The Wisc brain trust realized they needed to change the identity of the program for what’s coming in the new Big10. If they wanted...

Why Fickell chose Wisconsin over other Big10 opportunities

Luke realized Ohio state wouldn’t be available anytime soon. Ditto for Notre Dame. His 2 dream jobs. Michigan State was hot for him and he turned them down. Tucker was their second choice. He was all but signed until his wife visited East Lansing and nixed the deal. She reportedly fell in love...

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

Exactly. I think Wisconsin realized their approach wasn’t going to work in the new Big 10. Bigger upside or bigger downside than Iowa.

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

The talent separation happens in almost every power conference. Alabama, Georgia, LSU who? Oklahoma, Texas, and the one hit wonders TCU, Clemson, Miami, and occasionally another team. How many Big West teams have won the conference championship? Painful facts that won’t change very often...

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

Epic? Fickle is an upgrade for recruiting alone. When the divisions go away the big 3 in the east will duke it out with USC for the conference championship. Minnesota and Wisconsin will be fighting for a spot in the Bad Boy Mowers or Cheezit bowls. Not that great to look forward to.

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

I don’t get it. Wisky had some bad teams so they cleaned house. In 2023 they will struggle but don’t kid yourself Fickle is a proven great recruiter . His record is way better than Flecks. UC played a tougher schedule than WMU. In a couple of years expect the Badgers to be back competing for a...

For 2023 [Year 7] to be Deemed a Success

Winning the tallest midget division of the Big would be nice. 2 losses are almost a given. Split with Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Nebraska. 8-4 ?

    Monday night football - Scary

No pain if you don’t count the sore ribs from the cpr. 3 days in the icu is no fun being strapped down and no food. I felt fine which did not stop them from taking vitals every 2 hours. Implant wasn’t too bad. Released 15 hours after implant surgery. I bet Hamlin has a quick recovery but his...

    Monday night football - Scary

No symptoms before. I leaned over to pick up a ball after a point. Out went the lights . 6 weeks and back to tennis. No contact sports though. The implanted SICD (defibrillator) precludes me from that. Might not happen again but odds are increased that it will.

    Monday night football - Scary

Sounds a lot like sudden cardiac arrest. Cause could be coincidental to the hit. Signal from brain to heart interrupted. Not a heart attack. Not any warning. You collapse and turn bright purple No wonder the players were freaked out.. No blood pumping, no respiration. CPR and an AED can get your...

What's happening in WI QB room?

Chase Wolfe is a grinder. One of those Cincinnati 3 stars that Fickle seems to find and like. Chase competed with and replaced Sean Clifford at the same high school. My nephew played with him and said he was a winner even though he didn’t have the measureables of Clifford. Wisconsin should be...

    Cheez-it Bowl

At the end of the game the FSU players dumped a Gatorade bucket on their coach. Instead of Gatorade II was full of Cheezits. Creative marketing at its finest.

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

Fickel’s value is in recruiting. He has strong ties in the talent rich Cincinnati area . He will do well picking up the 3-3 1/2 stars that Ohio State misses. That was the core of his team. He should do well at Wisconsin and be an able adversary for Minnesota.

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

Rhule is an upgrade from Frost. With the current Joseph issue Nebraska may have dodged a bullet. Interesting to see how much Fickel can change Wisconsin’s identity to a more balanced attack

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

Coaching at Baylor I’m sure he made some contacts in Texas. He built that team from a bottom dweller to a big 12 contender with Texas talent. Fickel made the championship 4 as a non power school. Only time that has happened . The Big 10 west got a little harder with those 2 coming in. Add Riley...

    Wisconsin targeting Luke Fickell

In another thread on 11-21 I opened that Minnesota should back up a Brinks truck to Fickels house IF they were serious about replacing Fleck. Nobody thought it was feasible. Now Wisc and Nebraska have coaches who have developed BCS contenders at schools with more challenges than Minnesota...

To those calling to fire PJ, who would you hire in his place?

For some reason they seem to find good coaches. To wit, D’Antonio and Kelly. Minnesota would do well to back up a Brinks truck to Luke Fickel’s house before someone else does. He’s been passed over by Ohio State an ND which are his stated dream jobs. Fickels chance to coach in the Big10 and...

To those calling to fire PJ, who would you hire in his place?

I have posted before that Fleck is a good but not a great coach with an expectation of 8-9 wins most years. Fire him? No, because there is not a lot out that would realistically come to Minneapolis. OTOH, I don’t buy that the Gophers can’t jump to the next level with the right coach. To back up...
