Was this an offsides on us?

I don't think the call was right, and was as upset as anyone when it got made. But as someone pointed out, we got points on a drive where we got away with an obvious hands to the face. Kind of like when we get to the end of the year and people say "we were three plays away from three more...

Is it time to admit PJ (and staff) can coach?

I was happy with the way the team played in the second half, was super excited for a chance to tie or win at the end, and frustrated that the refs blew the call. That said, if 5 games in, the highlight of our season is that we played one good half that causes us only lose a tough road game by a...

    B1G Match 1: Gophers Host Wisconsin (9-25-24)

Massive win! Nice to start of the conference season with a win against a top opponent. I every sport, I really hate losing to Wisconsin.

Fleck again takes the blame but cites major problem with missed tackles

The inconsistency comes when he identifies specific deficiencies in others (even though he avoids mentioning them by name) but never any similar deficiencies with his own work (aside for the platitude "it's all on me."). Sure, the missed tackles were a problem in the loss. But, what were the...

What grade would you give the Gophers coaching in the loss to Iowa?

    Isn't it the same? Claeys/Kill/Horton: 4 Iowa, 0 Wisconsin. Fleck: 1 Iowa, 3 Wisconsin.

With non-conference schedule over, the Gophers are?

Going in, I assumed we'd best RI and Nevada, and thought we should beat NC. Almost went with worse than expected, but we were dominant enough in the last two that I went with about where I'd expected. Dropping to 2-2 would be disappointing, but I think we will beat Iowa at home. If I'm being...

Culture Counts: Deion Sanders chaotic culture turns into locker room violence in Colorado

It wasn't just that some people thought he was a great hire. It was how sanctimonious they were about people who thought he was an awful hire.

"Koi Perich is a Star in the Making"

I hope that doesn't get him benched.

How many good teams are there in college football?

I generally consider a good team to be one that is better than .500 (in conference) in a major conference, or a ranked mid major team. Might need to recalibrate now that the P5 seems to be splitting into tiers (Big 12 doesn't really feel like a power conference anymore).

"Koi Perich is a Star in the Making"

Who was that Michigan guy several years back who seemed to play about half the positions on the field (defense, offense, and special teams)? Even if not as effective as that player, do we think in the long run Koi could be used similarly? A guy who can impact all three phases? As much as I...

Iowa game will be a night game on NBC.

My aging body will appreciate being able to spread out the celebrations for winning those two trophies.

What grade do you give Gophers coaches in win over Rhode Island?

It's an A in an easy class. It's a team we were supposed to thump, and we thumped them. Zero complaints.

P.J. Fleck's Week 2 message to Gophers: 'Be a goldfish'

Of all of my concerns with his coaching, the figures of speech he uses with his team are not among them. He can go back to reading Everyone Poops if he can have this season resemble 2019 more than it resembles 2023.

Gophers football missed whopping 22 tackles in loss to North Carolina

The defense game up 252 yards, 3.9 yards per play, only one touchdown and 19 points against, and set up one of our touchdowns by spotting our offense the ball inside the 10. Yes, missed tackles are a problem, and I hope they clean that up so that we are even more effective going forward. But of...

P.J. Fleck on struggling offense: 'This isn't backyard football'

My issue with "it's all on me" is that he says that as a general statement, but then any specific analysis of what went wrong always seems to be exclusively player issues, without any reflection on what he could have done differently with his plan. It feels like he is trying to superficially...

P.J. Fleck on struggling offense: 'This isn't backyard football'

That bold part is the key. If you want to be a run heavy team, that's fine. You can succeed that way. But other coaches are going to know you are run heavy and stack the box (and good teams will be able to stop the run by doing that). You need to be able to take advantage and punish them with...

P.J. Fleck on struggling offense: 'This isn't backyard football'

He gets defensive really quickly. That's not new. I remember a few years back, when the narrative was he couldn't perform in big games because of his poor record in prime time games, he gave an interview where he said something that was basically saying that while he didn't agree with that...

P.J. Fleck on struggling offense: 'This isn't backyard football'

Holy straw man! People aren't asking for the air raid offense.
