Homecoming Predict the Score Thread: Maryland at Minnesota

That would be great. Almost a missed opportunity if our OL doesn’t find the sweet spot against a vulnerable defense.

    Still need to Prove It

After week 8, The Athletic has the Gophs ranked at 62. Way, way behind PSU and Illinois. Well behind WI. And meaningfully behind MD and Butgers. I don’t think the Gophers finish the season with an 0-5 steak. But there are no easy games. The struggle is real. 😡...

Homecoming Predict the Score Thread: Maryland at Minnesota

Gophers have not scored more than 24 points against a P4 team this year. If MD gets to 30 points, the Gophs will need to break new ground to win.

    For Entertainment Purposes Only

Maryland has a very good, kind of swashbuckling QB who can throw and run. Also one great WR. If we can contain the QB and force him into an errors, I like our chances. If our defense lets Maryland run wild, I think we probably lose the track meet. Go Gophers.

Gophers 5th in total defense nationally

Understand the point differential stat. We don’t score that much but our opponents usual score meaningfully less. But Maryland and Illinois both have highly productive offenses. Might tax or find exploitable weaknesses our D. Offense not clicking and getting behind early has been the Achilles...

Gophers 5th in total defense nationally

When you are 116th in total offense, it’s tough to come come back from being down two scores. This year’s team has, recently, been very good at making second-half adjustments and coming back from halftime deficits. Before the Michigan game, however, we were horse bleep at second half...

Kaden Johnson finally breaks loose … 75 yard TD. Iowa clawing its way back in.

    Week 8 Other Games Thread

Huge mystery: How can Michigan not have a half-decent QB? It’s got to have plenty of NIL money. QB play is almost unfathomable.

Bert’s teams (in the B1G) always play with physicality, speed, and confidence. Would love to have this be the year the Gophs finally solve the Bert riddle. Go Gophers!

    Week 8 Other Games Thread

We could easily be 6-1 now, if not for multiple self-inflicted wounds against UNC and Michigan. Maryland will be much tougher to defend against than either UNC or Michigan. Hopefully our offense plays a full 60 minutes against the Terps.

    Week 8 Other Games Thread

Looking back, it is hard to believe that we lost to both UNC and Michigan. Illinois is good. Darn. 🤬

    Week 8 Other Games Thread

His contract is very cheap to get out of. Indiana kind of nickeled and dimed him. Might come to regret it. I think Cignetti is for real. He uses all the bullets in his gun every game. His confidence and aggression are obviously empowering his team. Maybe it falls apart next year if QB O’Rourke...

    Week 8 Other Games Thread

Nebraska had the 13th ranked defense in the nation going into the IU game. Indiana is running up the score on Nebbie: 56-7 late in 4th Q.

    Week 8 Other Games Thread

Cignetti doesn’t play for close wins. No razor-thin margin games. He unleashes the offense and unabashedly tries to run up the score. Say what you will about opponents, but Indiana—well into the 4th Q—is averaging over 9 yards per play against what, to this point, has been a pretty formidable...

    Drops Are A Real Problem

Yup. Brosmer was a good pick-up. But the Gophs are dropping catchable downfield passes, and (other than DJ9) are doing squat on contested downfield passes. So, I think PJ and the OC are calling fewer downfield passes, even in clear situations (like second and one). Relying more on short and...

Big Ten quarterbacks ranked by Total QBR after Week 7 of 2024 season (12. Max Brosmer (Minnesota))

In 6 games, Gopher receivers have dropped 11 catchable downfield passes. Worst in the B1G, I believe (and 9th worse in the nation per recent article). As a result--low success rate on very catchable downfield balls--I suspect PJ and Harbaugh have probably dialed back on downfield pass attempts...

    Gopher RB Depth

I understand that Taylor and Majors have earned and are getting the vast majority of running play snaps. They have been effective. Their pure running yards are lower than Gopher RBs in years past, but we are using short passes to RBs in the flat and slip screens, etc. as "run substitutes." When...

Great time for a Bye Week

Agree with all you've said, esp. about the self-scouting exercise. Just will add: Somehow get the team prepared to play full rather than half games, and get receivers to haul in catchable downfield passes. Then the Gophs go 2-1 at least, maybe 3-0 in the coming stretch against non-ranked...

    Drops Are A Real Problem

Gophers don’t throw downfield much. OL protection problems are an obvious component. But drops by receivers downfield is probably another key factor. Brosmer has delivered a lot of catchable balls downfield that don’t get caught. If the Gophs are going to start scoring at a level that will allow...
