***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT WASHINGTON VALENTINES 💘 NIGHT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Yikes. The one thing Washington does well is rebound, especially on the offensive glass. It is, um, sub-optimal to lose your top defensive rebounder.

    NCAA Tournament Could it Happen?

Generally? Yes. Not a guarantee at all. I think it was Nebraska a few years ago that didn't get in with a winning league record, but the resume based on quads was poor. Right now, MN is 1-4 in Q2 and 0-2 in Q3. Kills the chances.

    NCAA Tournament Could it Happen?

Without a win at Michigan, I’d take that bet.

    NCAA Tournament Could it Happen?

The committee doesn't look at conference record. One of the stats they do look at is "wins above bubble", and that one doesn't look good for the Gophs, who currently sit at -3.7. The way this stat works, for example, is if the Gophs won at Michigan, they'd pick up 0.95 WAB; if they lose, they...

***OFFICIAL MARYLAND AT MINNESOTA SUPER BOWL SUNDAY IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

There is always variation in performance from game to game. I was going write a dissertation here, but suffice to say that that MN had an 87% chance of winning before the MD game, but there's always that 1 in 8 shot that does happen for the opponent (or poor performance for the favorite) In this...

***OFFICIAL MARYLAND AT MINNESOTA SUPER BOWL SUNDAY IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

The Gophs are #357 in pace out of 365. That is a conscious choice to try and preserve the energy of a short rotation (btw, CSU was in the high 200s under Niko, so he already coaches deliberate pace, but not this deliberate). The upside of that is that it tends to keep you in ballgames against...

***OFFICIAL MICHIGAN STATE AT MINNESOTA, IZZO TO COMPLIMENT MEDVED POST-GAME IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

on Torvik, it goes like this: MD - favored by 11.9, 87% chance to win @Wash - underdogs by 5, 30% chance to win - people may not understand that the Huskies are not the analytics cellar-dweller of last year - they're ranked ahead of the Gophs despite the identical conference record @Ore -...

"KenPom is bull***t" Sit back an enjoy this four minute dialogue from Doug Gottlieb on the KenPom rankings. (mentions St. Thomas, Minnesota)

I decided to watch the clip, and it wasn't what I thought it'd be. He was trying to make an argument that the Summit League representative will deserve better than a 16 seed (especially if the regular-season champ loses in their conference tourney, i.e. if GB happens to win). One of his more...

***OFFICIAL MICHIGAN STATE AT MINNESOTA, IZZO TO COMPLIMENT MEDVED POST-GAME IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

My Finn friend who grew up in the Keewenaw Peninsula of the UP always just said it means persistence - which seems a bit more concise, if less colorful.

***OFFICIAL MICHIGAN STATE AT MINNESOTA, IZZO TO COMPLIMENT MEDVED POST-GAME IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Yep. Torvik has a stat called F.U.N. (fortune unexplained by numbers) and the Gophs rank #346. MSU's real not-so-secret ingredient is rebounding. They are #6 at offensive rebounding, which atones for their pedestrian shooting numbers. They are also #1 at defensive rebounding. They also have...

Gophers' Selection Sunday "Magic Number" Is 21

I just wanted to compliment you on the buckets that you put all the teams into at the beginning of the year with not that much to go on. I'd only question one or two of them, and they're borderline (e.g. moving UCLA at the barn into the 50/50 bucket, and/or swapping the home and away Indiana...

    Braeden Carrington

Can you honestly say it was the wrong decision? Plus, there were a lot of people on this site - well, maybe it was one poster who liked to post the same thing over and over and over again - who felt he wasn't going to be much because he didn't think Trevor was much either. Even after his...

***OFFICIAL wisconsin AT MINNESOTA RIVALRY GAME IN-GAME THREAD, BETTER DEAD THAN RED!!!***

Counting Michigan as an only-water state is a bit misleading - short bridges over rivers in at least 3 spots that I know of (Detroit, Port Huron, and Sault Ste. Marie) - can't do that in either OH or PA. And there are border waters in at least NY and MN, if not more. Another trivia question you...

Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings: December 16 (#15. Minnesota)

That's an interesting question. They have talent, experience, and a proven coach, so you would think the answer is no. However, they went 0-5 against non-cupcakes (all top 50-ish, though only one of those was at home) and still have a "neutral" in Portland against Gonzaga this weekend. Their top...

Any Chance Niko can get Fleck to loan him Koi Perich?

I don't think it's a horrible idea from a basketball standpoint - desperate times and all that. If he can play at this level, it's probably as a scout teamer and end of the rotation 10-minute guy. That's not nothing, but it won't meaningfully change the team's fortunes at this point.
