    The Death of Gopher Basketball

Perhaps its the collective, lingering memories Williams Arena passion from 1971-1999 but the remnants of the fanbase from those years only need a little hustle & hope to roar their approval. And without direction & choreography. That makes it fun.

NCAA Has Released the First NET Rankings

Up until last night, I chalked it up to a lost season. Could a healthier team make the NIT? Note: This question may be anchored in irrational exuberance.

    All Big Ten Awards

His “regression” is at least partially related to our struggling corner backs. In 2024 he had the luxury of free-lancing and making plays because Walley and to a lesser extent Robinson were stout in coverage. This year he was always trying to anticipate which db would need help in coverage...

    Thoughts on 2026?

Dream: let’s go to Madison with the Jug & Floyd in hand. Obviously this would correlate with a great season. Imaging the number of Minnesota fans who would make the trip under those circumstances.

***OFFICIAL INDIANA AT MINNESOTA BIG TEN TEASE PORTION OF THE SCHEDULE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Wondering if this our first Big Ten home opener against Indiana since the epochal 1972 win. I remember the Strib sports headline was something like: “19191 see Gophers upset Hoosiers”. The capacity of Williams Arena was about 18,000 in the early 1970s. I’ve always wondered where did everyone...

Starting PG Chansey Willis out for the year

I recall in the 1970s—hopefully correctly—when Tom Vannelli and Butsy Erickson joined the hockey team about half way through the year (after one semester although the U was on quarters in those years?)

    Nevermind

Anyone heard why our 20-2 basketball team ranked 4th in the country in 1973 lost to Iowa & Northwestern to end the season—and poof the Big Ten championship and NCAA tourney disappeared…

NCAA Has Released the First NET Rankings

Setting aside the validity of the methodology early in the year the timing is not ideal for our team to face numbers 11 & 3 this week.

    SHUTOUT

There was far greater evidence to overturn the Oregon touchdown pass than this incompletion call. The inconsistency is the major issue no matter the standard applied.

***OFFICIAL wisconsin AT MINNESOTA PAUL BUNYAN 🪓 RIVALRY GAME IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Memories of 13-7 win in 1977 at Memorial Stadium with Minnesota needing to beat Wisconsin to qualify for the Hall of Fame Bowl in Birmingham. It was a snowy day with poor footing with Barber & Kitzmann carrying the ball most of the day. My recollection is the Badgers scored a late touchdown to...

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS SANTA CLARA THIRD-PLACE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Likely too small a sample size against an opponent which lost its focus but the rookies with Asuma/Tyson/Durkin played an effective five minutes. They ran some nice sets.

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS SANTA CLARA THIRD-PLACE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

We’ve generally spaced the court well in the tournament. That’s a bit of progress. Rebounding; ball-handling; shooting have been a struggle. Defense has been ghastly at times. Finished decently & with energy & great to see the rookies make some shots.

And then they call a push-off on a defensive rebound. Niko get in someone’s face.

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS SANTA CLARA THIRD-PLACE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Four or five decent defensive possessions playing zone. Offensively, 0-3 shooting threes and a turnover for a line violation before a basket on a run-out. Asuma breaks down the defense a couple times but refuses to take the ball to the hoop. It is maddening.

Is Emmett Johnson biggest miss ever

Credit Nebraska with identifying & developing more than criticizing Minnesota for not signing. Losing the likes of the Ruuds; Mauers; Jay Foreman back in the day far more costly.
