    Notable Coaching Changes 2024

Think Gearlds will get another year. Moseley and Kieger seem likely to be fired. Also past time for McKeown to retire, so likely 3 BIG jobs will be open soon.

B1G tourney game 1: Gophers versus Washington (3-5-25)

Was happy when Dawn P won a tournament game last year, hopefully showing that Minnesota under her regime will show up in the BIG tournament. Will be there in Indy to see Coach P in year two, hoping to watch more than 1 Gophers game. When you look at the tourney record book, the Gophers record...

March 3 WBB bracketology by ESPN and herhoopstats. They agree on all 13 BIG teams, except Indiana. USC 1 UCLA 1 OSU 5 MD 5 MSU 6 Iowa 6 Michigan 7 Illinois 8 Oregon 10 IU 10/8 (ESPN/hhs) Nebraska 10 Minnesota 11 (last 4 in) Washington 11(last 4 in)

    NCAA Bracketology

Sunday March 2 WBB bracketology from herhoopstats has the Gophers in the Big Dance as an 11-seed playing a First-Four game against Iowa State. Perhaps a fitting matchup, because unless Iowa State beats Kansas State today (ISU has a good chance today), ISU and the Gophers will both end the...

B1G Game 18: Gophers visit Michigan State (3-1-25)

This game is there for the taking. Michigan State is 3-5 in the second half of BIG play, including victories over Wisconsin and Northwestern. Not impressed with Sparty. Gophers can punch their ticket with a good half of basketball.

It's bubble time. ESPN today (2/28) has the Gophers as last four in playing a first-four game, while CBS today has the Gophers in the first four out.

    B1G Game 17: Gophers host Washington (2-26-25)

I think you are on to something with Holloway, especially in the quick return matchup with Washington/Daniels. Hart is a really bad matchup for players like Daniels (and Hannah Stuelke to a lesser degree). When Hart is matchup challenged, would love to see more of a 3-way split with Holloway...

    B1G Game 17: Gophers host Washington (2-26-25)

Washington is an oddity in this year’s BIG. As the league has gotten more defensive, Washington looks like a Lisa Bluder team, #1 in league play in offensive effective field goal percentage, while # 15 in defensive effective field goal percentage.

    2025-2026 season starters

On offense, the lineup challenge will be to maintain this year’s great improvement from 2, and figure out how to shoot better from 3. Losing Stewart hurts the 3–pt offense, but hope Braun, Johnson and 2nd-year McKinney can more than fill the void.

    NCAA Bracketology

You're right about championship droughts for Big Ten MBB and WBB, but I wouldn't lump the BIG men and women together in terms of rarity of Final Four appearances. The men frequently make the Final Four: 9 appearances since 2010, hardly a rare occurrence. You're also right about the BIG women...

The legacy BIG teams will likely have to surprise on the road in the 2nd round of the tourney to avoid a bad showing. The BIG had 11 host opportunities over the last 3 years, contributing to 8/9 Sweet 16s, 5/5 Elite Eights, and 2/2 Final Fours. As of today, OSU is trying to hang on to host...

    B1G Game 16: Gophers visit Purdue (2-19-25)

A loss tonight could really hurt the Gophers' NCAA dreams, but Purdue is bad. Perhaps the worst Purdue team in 40 years (a long period with not many bad Purdue teams). On a press conference/personality basis, Gearlds is one of my favorite coaches in the BIG, but she is having a rough year 4...

    Pathetic Schedule

FWIW from a Purdue writer today: PRESSING QUESTION Would you prefer Gearlds assemble a non-conference schedule similar to Minnesota's? The Gophers went 12-0 against the 357th-ranked non-conference schedule in the country, including 10 [really 8] home games. They won 12 non-conference games for...

    NCAA Bracketology

So far, it seems like the bracketology projections care only about the NET ranking, and don’t care anything about the new quad system. Will be interesting to see if the selection committee acts the same way. As of today, ESPN has the Gophers as a 10 seed, despite being 0-6 in Quad 1 games and...

    B1G Game 15: Gophers host Ducks (2-16-25)

If you had told me before the game that the Gophers were going to shoot 9 for 15 from 3, I would have been confident of a Gopher victory. Wasted by far the best 3-point shooting game of the conference season. Not as crazy as the 3-point barrage last season at Michigan, but still a very good...

    NCAA Bracketology

NCAA reveal confirms that the legacy BIG teams are down this year. 1 legacy BIG team in the top 16 is a weak showing. Injuries at Maryland, Illinois, Nebraska & Minnesota really altered the BIG season. MSU still has USC, UCLA and OSU. Sparty still has a chance to make some noise.

B1G Game 14: Gophers visit Ohio State (2-13-25)

The bubble is weak this year, and I think the Gophers would get in at 9-9. But Penn State went 9-9 last year, finishing with a 27 NET ranking, and did not make the tournament. Also, in the 4-year history of the NET for WBB, only 1 team has been selected as an at-large team with 0 Quad 1 wins...

B1G Game 14: Gophers visit Ohio State (2-13-25)

Agree. Not a fan of OSU over the years. They have long been a Big Ten bell cow that underperforms in the NCAA tourney. Pretty sure the OSU-Gophers series is the most one-sided series in BIG history among legacy BIG teams. With the loss tonight, the Gophers are 16-67 against OSU.

B1G Game 14: Gophers visit Ohio State (2-13-25)

Loved the half-court offense tonight. OSU is a mediocre half-court defensive team, and the Gophers took advantage. Shooting north of 50% on the road against a ranked team is unusual efficiency for the Gophers.
